The last few years have been incredibly difficult. Life has been overwhelming, discouraging, and confusing. Maybe you've felt sad, disappointed or pulled in too many directions. You may experience fear that seems to bubble up out of nowhere. Perhaps nightmares are interrupting your sleep. Maybe you're dealing with addiction or someone you love is using drugs or alcohol. These experiences can leave you feeling alone, scared and misunderstood. You probably don't let those around you know that you are not ok.

Human beings are resilient. They survive unimaginable things through resourceful measures, though these can be incomprehensible to others. Sometimes, the very things people do to get through tough times can result in negative consequences (for example: addictions, people-pleasing, perfectionism, suicidal behaviors, or avoidance). Recognizing this, some seek therapy to find different ways to thrive that cause less disruption in their lives and/or less harm to themselves. Some people use therapy to process events from earlier years while others focus on adjusting current behaviors. There is no wrong way on the path toward healing.

Sometimes, finding hope and purpose can be really difficult. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, relationship issues, teenager adjustments, or even an addiction, the storms of life can be challenging, but you don’t have to weather those storms alone. Everyone deserves to feel hope…everyone deserves to live life with purpose. As a counselor, I've had the privilege of walking with hundreds of people through heavy and often overwhelming seasons in their lives. One of the many things I've learned is that your past does not need to define your future. Restored health, hope, and purpose can be your reality.

"Learning, Healing, Growing" is my goal for your journey in life. I work from a Cognitive Behavorial Therapy system and take a mindfulness approach. I believe that our daily activities are based on our thinking processes. I like to teach hollistic approaches to dealing with life issues (deep breathing, mindfulness, meditation, etc.) and incorporating positive thinking into sessions. This works with many life issues: depression, stress/anxiety, emotional issues, grief, relationship issues, etc. I have experience with couples, helping to find communication errors and helping to relieve some of the issues that cause the space between two people grow larger.

If your marriage has too much conflict, too little togetherness, or it just feels like you've gone in different directions, I can help you get back on the track you want to be on. Some times the patterns that are developed in marriage need a little jolt in order to shift onto a better path. Working on these issues with practical tools in the context of your life in Christ gives you resources that are unavailable simply working on these things yourselves. If you are an individual struggling with anxiety or depression or relational problems, I can also help you with a plan and tools to handle life more effectively.

Are you struggling with things that have happened to you or that you’ve done? That struggle is a normal reaction to abnormal events that may have left you feeling unlike yourself. It becomes consuming, costing you time with loved ones and friends, money, sense of peace, sleep, pleasure, joy, or your health and you want nothing more than to be yourself again; maybe even find yourself for the first time ever. I don't judge and am here to listen and be with whatever is going on with you, to provide a safe holding place for emotions and problems, and, if you’re ready, to facilitate interventions to help you reach your personal goals.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
