I work with individuals (both teens and adults), couples and family systems. I have helped people to heal from past hurts, sexuality, addiction/compulsivity, betrayal trauma, anxiety, depression and relationship struggles. Our sessions will be focused on the reasons you are seeking help. If you are seeking individual therapy, common issues we often discuss include: how to improve relationships, work through stressors and trauma, and have healthier ways of managing mood including anxiety and depression. It is also common that I discuss with you how your past experiences influence your life and your relationships today.

I specialize in 3 areas: relationships, addiction recovery & wellness. Using a holistic approach, I work with clients to identify underlying issues and concerns that keep clients from making sustainable change, while creating an environment where clients feel valued and safe. I use the Enneagram of personality typology with clients so they can identify their mental, emotional, and behavioral patterns and raise self-awareness. Clients are introduced to Enneagram type based practices they can use on their own to sustain desired change.

Providing therapy to individuals who are struggling as a result of current stressors they are experiencing, substance abuse issues, unresolved trauma or any other things that are causing you to feel stuck. The pandemic has presented a whole myriad of issues that has also tested many people and possibly surfaced issues that people didn't realize existed. Whatever the issue, therapy is a good start to begin finding ways of coping and processing to begin to heal and move forward. The goal of therapy is to begin a process of change that you can continue on your own.

I have been a counselor for 20+ years. I work with most substance and/or process addictions, my favorite work being with people dealing with compulsive sexual behavior. I have trained with Pia Mellody and embrace her work on Developmental Immaturity. I am in recovery myself, for 33 years, and enjoy helping others who want to overcome their addictive behaviors. I believe in the importance of treating the underlying childhood issues as well as building a 12-step based recovery. I help people free themselves from isolation and shame caused by addictive behaviors and reengage in their lives from a place of sobriety, peace and joy.

I’m a licensed therapist (LISAC) that focuses specifically on treating substance abuse.
Stress? Anxiety? Withdrawal symptoms? Cravings? “I want to stop the cycle. I do. I don’t know where to begin, what to say. There’s just so much to figure out…and it’s all too much. I’ll just take another drink, pick up one more time.” Or, you’re the family member, partner, or friend who’s trying to help someone they care about with their addiction but living on the other side of it. “I’m not sleeping anymore. I have my own racing thoughts, heart palpitations, anxiety. I’m consumed by their addiction and I don’t even use! I’ve taken them to pick up before. What am I doing? I need someone to help me sort this out.”

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
