Asking for help may be the hardest and most courageous thing any of us can do. Utilizing Narrative Therapy, I help clients identify their values and skills to help them effectively confront current and future problems. I want to help people challenge and change the scripts that hold them back from self-compassion, curiosity, and creativity. My ultimate goal is to help people cultivate joy in their lives so that they can feel connected to the moments and people that matter to them most.

I like people and enjoy getting to know and understand them. There are many ways we can get stuck or get weighed down in life issues. It is exciting for me to assist others in finding ways to get on with living. I believe this occurs when a client feels comfortable in the relationship with their therapist. As a therapist, my first task is to provide a safe environment for a person to experience themselves in new ways.

Hello! I am a licensed mental health counselor associate (LMHCA) working in Western Washington. I work with children and adults experiencing depression, anxiety, and behavioral issues. Struggling in any one of these areas can leave you feeling stuck, hopeless, helpless, and frustrated. I am an empathetic therapist who focuses on the client's needs. I will help guide you through these difficult emotions while helping to identify the root cause. I do not want to only help you alleviate the symptoms you experience but help you to deal with the underlying issue(s) at hand.

Hypnosis is not what you think it is. People get the idea from pop culture that hypnosis is something I will put on you or do to you. This isn't true. You’ve already been in a hypnotic state thousands of times throughout your life. Hypnotherapy is simply using this perfectly natural state to create positive change. This typically requires 3 to 5 sessions. As a certified hypnotherapist, I use hypnosis to help clients overcome limiting and negative behaviors, feelings, & chronic pain. The issues you struggle with originate below the conscious level. If they didn’t, you would easily be able to overcome them using your conscious mind.

I provide a space for people to be with all aspects of who they are "“ mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I believe we are all experts on our own lives and have within us the knowing of what is best for us. There are times when we feel disconnected from that knowing and can benefit from support in reconnecting with it. I offer space to enter into a deeper exploration of one's life. I support others in accessing their inner process in order to be with all of the parts of one's personality and all the information and wisdom held there.

I typically work with individuals whose lives have become unmanageable due to exposure to stressors, adversity, and trauma. Encounters with trauma often markedly disrupt a person’s life, making emotions difficult to manage and misdirecting energies away from important life goals and aspirations. Trauma also makes it difficult to navigate life transitions smoothly, establish and maintain close, meaningful relationships, and feel good about oneself. Psychotherapy is a collaborative, empathic endeavor that works to create a positive sense of self. It promotes agency, choice, and freedom, and, ultimately, engenders a life well-lived.

It is a great honor to walk beside you on this journey. As your therapist, I accept you as you are and not as you should be. Although I believe that therapy is a self healing process , I am here to hold space for you and provide tools to assist you as you navigate your life experience. In 2019, I transitioned into Community Mental Health which is where I have practiced different therapeutic models with individuals from all walks of life. Therapy is not a one size fits all experience which is why I adopt many therapeutic lenses and tailor them to each client.

I see us struggling with a pandemic of loneliness. Especially after COVID isolation, teens and younger adults, especially are at risk of experiencing a debilitating lack of connection, momentum, and purpose. Loneliness has the power to drag down every facet of our lives. The insecurity and depression that creep up in the dark depths of loneliness keep us down and away from the connection that we need. Therapy can be the life rope that begins us on our journey toward the light. I work well with clients who are skeptical about therapy for any number of reasons. I am confident you can thrive.

Hello, I'm Shawn Berthel, (M.S., LCMHC). In my private practice, I believe you can be helped to make shifts in your behavior and thinking processes, to create awareness of your issues, and to change the areas you wish to correct. You will be encouraged to empower yourself, and become a partner in your own self-care. These changes may be slow or difficult at first. However, I know that you have the innate power to maximize your strengths and seek out necessary support, so you can move forward positively into a new life filled with opportunity.

Do you feel overwhelmed by the state of the world, the endless bombardment of one felt catastrophe after another in addition to all you already do each day? It can be easy to get lost in the monotony of the day to day and lose track of WHO we are. Life can also become overwhelming and even the smallest tasks feel insurmountable. In therapy we take the complexities all around and seek transformation.

I believe in a collaborative approach to therapy. In partnership, we will work to explore your needs and develop a treatment plan to address identified issues. I primarily employ a cognitive-behavioral approach as this treatment modality has been shown to be effective in therapy. In addition, I use a strengths-based framework. Together we will address symptom management, build on your pre-existing strengths, and further develop your coping strategies. In addition, our work will likely include making meaning of important life events.

Feeling overwhelmed? Struggling with transition, trauma, or loss? Longing for a life that fits with who you truly are inside? Depression, grief, relationship issues, trauma, & anxiety can leave you exhausted, stuck in painful old patterns. But they can also be opportunities for growth. Therapy is a process of "tending the soul," as well as addressing life's problems. I especially like working with women in midlife. To learn more about finding balance in middle age, check out the "Recent Articles" section on my website: www.soulcarepsychotherapy.com/

Hi! I'm Lou. I work with queer and trans young adults. Therapy can be challenging, but it can also be beautiful and healing. It is my goal to meet you with compassion, support, and a safe space to help you through whatever difficulties or pain you may be experiencing. As a part of the Queer and trans community, I understand how important representation and connection is. Of course, we all have our own unique stories. Your story is not my story, and my story is not yours. However, I find that it is incredibly helpful (and dare I say, healing even) to have that common understanding and shared experience with my clients.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Tacoma?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
