I'm also trained in Trauma Focused CBT, DBT, DNA-v and ACT, and certified ADHD/Executive Function professional.
My role in the therapeutic relationship is to help guide individuals to what their bodies and brains already know though may not be able to access just yet. I aim to provide insight that can disrupt the now-unhelpful routines and habits that may keep you stuck or pull you down. This is an alliance. You bring all that you are and all that you know about yourself while I guide how to move through some of the harder parts. Together, we can find the path for you to see that you are a pretty amazing human being who deserves to feel comfortable in your own skin and are worthy of compassion.

My overall practice framework is "Acceptance and commitment therapy" (ACT) which is an action-oriented approach to identify thoughts, feelings and behaviors getting in the way of reaching identified goals .
I specialize in helping people work through anxiety, depression, traumatic experiences and adjust to life changes. My goal is to help you find a way to identify and then move towards what is most important in your life. This can entail identifying obstacles that can keep us trapped in old patterns and habits that no longer serve us well, such as traumatic memories or simply negative concepts about ourselves. Entering therapy is signaling that you are ready to make significant change - whether in behaviors or thoughts - to find deeper meaning in your life.

I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused interventions.
At one point or another we can all benefit from what therapy has to offer. I commit to creating a compassionate space for you to break from your daily routine and shed the layers no longer serving you. I believe counseling to be a collaborative journey towards growth, adaptation, and healing.

My belief that each of us has the potential to heal and transform, guides and informs my work as a therapist. I help people overcome anxiety, deal with depression, and emerge from trauma. I approach each person individually with warmth and compassion, and I strive to help harness a person's own natural strengths to work through problems of substance use, major life transitions, or concerns centering on gender and sexual identity. My therapeutic approach stems from extensive training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Problem Solving Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - including Cognitive Processing Therapy for Trauma.

I have a dog named Jake. When I lay with him and hold his paw it’s one of the best feelings in the world. He makes me melt. My breathing slows down and I am in my happy place. In psychology we would call this coregulating. Have you ever experienced this with an animal or a loved one? We were made to be in relationship with one another. To love and be loved. To coregulate. Sometimes we get off course and need to learn how to connect again. That’s where I come in. I work with individuals and couples looking to show up differently in their relationships.

You are doing a lot, but you tell yourself it is not good enough. You walk by the mirror and check your reflection. Not good enough. Others give you praise, and you don't buy it; you may not even hear it. You keep telling yourself that when you reach your goal weight, you will be happy. When you finish this project at work, you will be happy. But those promises don't come true. Time and again you set a new goal, only to be let down. You want to break out of this cycle, but you don't know how. You may even feel ambivalent about asking for help, or making any changes.

After working in preventative mental health care as a mindfulness educator, I gravitated towards social work because of its emphasis on exploring ourselves in the context of the world around us. My orientation as a mental health counselor is rooted in curiosity about what it means to be human and to heal. It is also grounded in the belief that any work we do to understand ourselves more deeply can have a profound reparative impact that goes beyond the individual into the community at large. Counseling is an opportunity to connect with someone who can hold space to observe and learn from your personal experience.

It is a courageous step to consider and begin therapy. Life offers us many joys and successes and along the way, challenges and stresses. We all have periods when the challenges and stresses seem to completely overshadow the joys. In these moments we may feel directionless, stuck in sadness and fear, anxiety and depression, emptiness and shame. No matter how stuck we may feel, there is always a path through.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
