Hi, I'm Jeffrey Spike, AKA Spike the Psych. Unlike several Tele-Health providers who overcharge, I'm certified, I charge less, and I'm excellent at what I do. I've been a licensed educational psychologist since 2012, while working full time for LAUSD since 2005. I was the recipient of the Los Angeles Association of School Psychologists Outstanding Psychologist of the Year award. With 20 years of experience, I have successfully identified the primary strengths and needs of students with Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, emotional and behavior difficulties; and I get them the accommodations and support they deserve for success.

My passion and purpose in this line of work is to educate and equip to safeguard the pure vibrancy of what childhood should be. To not get snagged in the online world. To not feel lost or misunderstood at school. To assist parents who have lost their ability to respond effectively to the challenges that now confront them. Sometimes, often times we are harboring a lot of our own unhealed pain that is now standing in the way of our best interests and the best interests of our children. To provide a safe place to share doubts and worry to regroup in a peaceful setting no matter what point of the lifespan or healing you are on.

I believe people can be so much more than the sum of their life experiences and the roles they have adapted to. Maybe it feels like life has gotten too hard because it's filled with anxieties or depression. Maybe you feel trapped by an addiction or that the life you are living is someone else's script. I believe I can help. Why? I have over 20 years of personal recovery from drugs and alcohol along with years of experience and education in the mental health field.

I am a bilingual and bicultural psychologist and it is an honor to support those that are on the path of healing and growth. I specialize in working with people of all ages that suffer from anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, and intimate partner violence. I also work with children and their caregivers to strengthen their attachment. In therapy I introduce the concepts of how being connected to our cultural traditions, values and ancestors can lead to a happier life. “Sana”, means “heal” in Spanish. It is my hope to help individuals, couples, and families heal through learning how to live more peaceful and fulfilling lives.

It is a challenging experience finding a therapist. It is challenging because you have to be brave enough to seek therapy even though there is stigma, fear, and doubt that you may hear from others or even your own mind that says to not even try. To further make it challenging, you may have a lengthier search finding a therapist who fits with you personally after coming up with the courage to even meet with one. So I'd like to thank you for seeking therapy in general and also thank you for allowing me to share some details of my practice so that you might consider us working together.

I see our lives as a journey, and psychotherapy as a tool to take the next step on the journey. On the way we experience challenges: shock and trauma, loss and grief, fear and anxiety, disappointment and anger, guilt and shame, physical and emotional illness. It takes courage to grow and learn from challenges, and to reach out for help, rather than shutting down and disconnecting. These challenges can become the portal to self-development. I am honored to work with you as a partner, to assist you to steer through difficult transitions and experiences, transform challenges into growth, and flourish on your life journey.

Everyone deserves a place to feel seen, heard and fully known; a place to explore the parts of yourself that need care and extra attention. As a therapist, it is an incredible honor to be able to sit with you as you begin the hard work of allowing all the parts of yourself…the parts that have been tucked away, the light and dark, to take up space and experience lasting healing. I approach therapy through a wholistic lens that gives attention to mind, body, and spirit.

I work with individuals who are looking to gain insight into themselves and improve their quality of life. I seek to understand each individual holistically, including their backgrounds and the strengths they already possess to provide an individualized approach. I believe that establishing a strong alliance with my clients is essential to getting the most out of therapy and creating lasting change. Through this alliance, I partner with my clients to explore and address thought and behavior patterns that serve as barriers to enjoying life fully.

How can I find a therapist in California?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
