As a culturally sensitive therapist to all walks of life, I focus on supporting the healing heart. Are you an individual or couple/family group experiencing family relationship and personal life issues; substance abuse, domestic violence and anger control difficulties? I love to assist individuals in discovering and eliminating root causes inhibiting personal growth, self-understanding, and the removal of barriers that are blocking effective communications, conflict resolution, positive behavior choices and effective self control. I am person centered so that you are able to reach past the emotion to touch understanding.

Experiencing issues with addiction, anger, or anxiety is dulling your hope and getting in the way of meeting your needs. Acceptance, courage, and wisdom is a recipe that works, and we can work together to get there.

You've been through a lot. Life is hard. Maybe you feel disconnected, on edge, or stuck. Maybe anxiety is high, trust is hard, and managing triggers seems nearly impossible. Maybe you've tried therapy before and the therapist wasn't the right fit or maybe you weren't 100% ready yet. Fast forward to today and you feel ready to try this "therapy" thing again. If you're seeking a space where you can be real, heal, and achieve your goals, I'd like to say hi. My name is Victoria and my approach is about giving you tools to handle the tough stuff while respecting your journey. I keep it real, honest, and productive.

If you are dealing with stress, trauma, anxiety or depression it can be achingly difficult to reach out for help. Sometimes we feel unworthy, or like we're moving through molasses and its just too exhausting to try. The first step is often the hardest even if it may be the smallest. My name is Maliko and I am a second generation Japanese American living in Fairbanks, Alaska, also known as Tanana Dene Land who specializes in body based, neurodivergent affirming, trauma responsive therapy. The mind and body aren't separate pieces, they're two parts of one whole. And that whole is you.

Today's world presents numerous challenges, worsened by dysfunction in our societal systems like healthcare and education. This heightens stress, anxiety and depression, and many people carry the weight of trauma. These impact our emotional and physical capacities and wellbeing. Yet, we possess a remarkable capacity for healing and personal growth, often in the context of a therapeutic relationship that offers connection, safety and understanding. Examining relationships and values, and recognizing the challenges and capacity for healing each of us possess fosters hope and reveals the potential for renewed purpose.

I provide a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that combines standard "talk therapy" with Jungian-based tools and art/play therapy approaches that allow for much greater exploration of the unconscious than standard CBT. With 25 years counseling experience using a wide variety of therapy techniques I have found this combination works far better than other approaches for getting good results. I work with clients ages 5 and up, as well as with couples and families. Please see my website www.utherapy,net for full details on me and my practice.

As an adult survivor of child abuse who overcame a hard childhood to create success, you are good at problem solving and powering through, but you experience a disconnection from your feelings, your body, and your relationships. You are good at pulling it together, putting your feelings aside and focusing to get things done. When you aren’t numb inside, you feel anxious until you find a way to numb out again. Sometimes the things you do to numb out: over-drinking, overeating, overworking, make you feel worse. You love your partner, but you often feel far away from them emotionally. It’s hard to receive touch from someone you love.

Maybe things have "always been this way," but that doesn't mean they have to stay this way. I believe you already have the resources within you to change and grow, live authentically, and find your voice. My role is to hold up a mirror, to support you in finding clarity. I work with teens, adults, and couples navigating anxiety, relationship strain, and big life transitions. Many of my clients are parents struggling to support youth and young adults who feel anxious or hesitant to step into independence. If you're looking to overcome barriers to deeper connection or to restore calm in your home, I'd be honored to work with you.

I treat a wide range of diagnoses and concerns using a psychodynamic approach to psychotherapy. I believe healing can be found through self-understanding. When we become compassionately self-aware, we can break painful patterns, make sustainable changes, and improve our relationships by engaging with ourselves and others in more authentic and meaningful ways.

As a therapist, my approach is deeply rooted in personal experience. In 2022, we faced the heartbreaking loss of our son, who was stillborn. This profound experience ignited my passion for supporting mothers who have gone through similar losses and others navigating the difficult path of grief. I understand the complexities of grief firsthand and am committed to helping others find healing in their own journeys. In my work, I create a supportive and empathetic space where clients can explore their emotions and work through challenges.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
