My ideal client feels stuck despite their efforts to heal. They’re thoughtful and capable, but ready to understand themselves more deeply and finally break free from old patterns. Many have tried therapy before and want something that really works more quickly than some traditional approaches. I use EMDR and ART and other evidence-based approaches (CBT, psychodynamic and others) to help clients move through trauma efficiently and effectively. My approach is real, warm, and infused with humor. Together, we focus on lasting change—so you can feel safe in your own skin and live with calm, confidence, and connection.

You're there, in the dark, struggling to find a way out. You're trying to just get through today. At times, even breathing seems to be too much. Life is so exhausting. Some days it takes everything you can muster just to get through the next minute. The people around you, your friends, your family, if they are still there, don’t get you. If you hear “just get over it” or “think about happy things” one more time you’ll scream. Why don’t they get it? This isn’t something you “just get over”! Like you would pick this life if you had a choice? There’s only the darkness, full of loneliness, worry, hopelessness, and despair.

I treat a wide range of diagnoses and concerns using a psychodynamic approach to psychotherapy. I believe healing can be found through self-understanding. When we become compassionately self-aware, we can break painful patterns, make sustainable changes, and improve our relationships by engaging with ourselves and others in more authentic and meaningful ways.

My approach to therapy comes from the belief that within each of us is an inner wisdom, that when accessed will guide us to new insights, answers, relief and even healing from our burdens and struggles. I believe we are all designed to find healing, when we do our own, honest "soul searching" or inner exploration. Richard Schwartz, developer of the Internal Family Systems model, stumbled upon an approach to navigating our internal systems through work with his clients. He discovered that we all possess the positive qualities of calmness, compassion, confidence, courage, etc. when connected to this source of inner wisdom.

Healing is hard work. and change comes from doing the hard things. My client would be someone who is willing to work hard to improve their life and circumstances, but who also has a good sense of humor and can laugh about the challenges and setbacks that come with life. They would be open and honest, willing to talk openly and honestly about their experiences. They would be resilient and have the ability to find humor in difficult situations, as well as the capacity to find joy in life's small moments.

Do you feel frustrated in your relationships? Is anxiety preventing you from feeling like your most confident self? Are you relying on substances or addictive behaviors to cope? Relationships are challenging, anxiety is draining and using substances may feel like the only way out. The folks I work with are looking for a therapist to accept their situation, create a space of emotional safety and provide tools for healing, growth, and strength.

Do you go through the motions of life feeling stressed, anxious, exhausted, angry, or sad? Do you feel numb or worry about things that haven’t even happened yet? “Why did I say that”? "What's wrong with me?"What if it happens again"? "Why me"? The conflicts you feel - with yourself, your relationships, and life, are sapping your energy and robbing you of joy. Maybe you've tried dealing with it on your own- maybe in healthy ways and some not, and yet it remains. You feel exhausted and powerless. "Will it be like this forever?" It certainly could be -but it doesn't have to be. You are not alone, I can help.

You’ve been through some tough stuff. Talking about it hasn’t brought you the relief you hoped. You’re still feeling on edge, waiting for the next bad thing to happen. In your head, you know you’re safe now, but there’s a part of you that still doesn’t really believe that. Worst of all, sometimes you can't even explain or understand all the feelings yet something is getting in the way of you trusting and connecting with others. You try to get on with your life the best you can, powering through the discomfort that comes up. But something is happening in your body and mind that just doesn't make sense. You question, Am I broken

I Don’t Know—and That’s a Good Place to Start! Many people come to therapy feeling pressure to have answers: Why am I like this? What’s wrong with me? How do I fix it? In my work, “I don’t know” isn’t a failure—it’s often where change begins. I practice from an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) approach. ACT is especially helpful for people who are smart, capable, and prone to overthinking, yet still feel stuck, anxious, or disconnected. Rather than trying to get rid of difficult thoughts or emotions, we focus on changing how you relate to them—so they stop running the show. Many of my clients “seem fine” on the outside, but…

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
