Your decision to enter the process of therapy is an act of trust that I take seriously and respectfully. I've had the privilege of assisting women, men, couples and youth as they work through the variety of experiences and challenges that make us human. Although I was initially trained in psychodynamic and attachment theory, we may incorporate any of several clinical approaches. What suits the client's needs and preferences is key. Together, we create a supportive atmosphere where what matters to the client can be expressed and explored. More satisfying and effective ways of moving forward can be nurtured.

You feel everything deeply, and sometimes it's too much. Maybe you're the empath, the people pleaser, the eldest daughter who learned to keep the peace at your own expense. You're exhausted from shrinking and losing yourself. Perhaps you're a teen or young adult figuring out who you are in a world that moves fast. Or maybe you and your partner love each other but keep getting stuck — same argument, same silence, same hurt. You're longing to reconnect, feel truly seen, and make real, lasting change. LGBTQ+ folks and BIPOC communities are warmly welcomed here.

There are so many ways that life can be difficult and so many paths for healing to take. My priority is to be present for you in the unique difficulties of your unique situation. Together we can create a safe, warm, and open environment to work through trauma, depression, anxiety, and the myriad pains that we all encounter. I strive to be warm, friendly, playful, direct, and conversational. I draw from a variety of perspectives ranging from the humanistic to the somatic and neuroscientific. But these various perspectives will always be used in the service of your particular situation and needs.

I provide psychotherapy to individuals and families to promote growth and empowerment through supportive listening, mindfulness, and examination of past experiences, allowing clients to cultivate insight and bring about lasting change. I use a collaborative and dynamic approach that incorporates multiple theoretical approaches and techniques to meet both individual and family needs and preferences. I believe that insight alone does not bring about change; rather, we must do something different to become something different. I offer compassion, humor, honesty, and straightforward feedback while I empower individuals and families to explore their own goals and work toward growth and healing.

I am a growth-oriented, client-centered relationship, intimacy, and sex therapist committed to helping my clients experience liberation from internalized shame, anxiety, unmet wants/needs, and other obstacles that have held them back from being their most expressive, free, authentic selves. I believe my clients are the experts of their own lives, and yet all of us can benefit from outside perspectives. If you have felt like you are a character in a story written by someone else (a passenger floating through life), I would consider it an honor to support you in taking the pen and authoring your own preferred narrative.

Do you feel isolated? Do you simultaneously want connection and feel that you have a hard time trusting people and opening up to them? Do you have a tendency to intellectualize your problems? Is it sometimes hard for you to feel your feelings? When you do feel them, do you often feel sad or anxious but are usually able to redirect and feel “fine”? Do you cope by focusing on external goals and hobbies? Do you wish that you could feel a deep and lasting sense of security, peace, and belonging?

We all find ourselves in circumstances at one time or another that call for adjusting to change or making decisions, whether it's charting a path through grief and loss, developmental transitions, job loss, recovering from trauma or the challenges of parenting. Therapy can be helpful in sorting through confusing thoughts and feelings, gaining insight, establishing a course of action amongst different choices, and building confidence through experiencing a deeper understanding of yourself, all in the context of a caring relationship.

I've been passionate about offering therapy to queer people for all of my 40 years as a therapist. While therapy with gay men has been the heart of my practice, along the way I've gained experience working with other people and situations: e.g., women; people of various classes, ethnicities and races; massive cultural trauma; HIV and other grave and/or chronic illness, including migraines; grief and mourning. And I love working with artists! Since moving to Seattle in 2006, I've found myself working with a wide range of couples, work which remains rewarding, challenging, and a welcome constant in my practice.

As a trauma-informed therapist, I am passionate about walking along side others on their journey toward wholeness and healing. I work with adults, adolescents, and children experiencing a wide range of emotional or behavioral issues. All of us have experienced suffering or relational brokenness within our stories that can feel confusing or hard to address. While we are most often harmed in relationship, it is also in relationship that we heal. It is my hope that in our sessions, you will experience the relief of engaging the hard moments of your story in the presence of a supportive witness as you move toward healing.

I help people struggling with attachment difficulties and unprocessed pain find relief and live more effective, connected, and fulfilling lives. The people that I treat in my practice show up because something in their lives is no longer working (they may not even know what exactly that something is yet), and they are tired of suffering and are ready to try something different. They are committed to exploring their pain and ready to take action to make their lives better. Together, we will uncover the underlying attachment patterns, beliefs, past experiences and emotions that keep you stuck, and help you find ways to move forward.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
