As a sex therapist working with individuals and couples of all structures, my work focuses on helping clients cultivate self-awareness, shift patterns that no longer serve them, and build more fulfilling relationships. I specialize in psychotherapy centered on sex, intimacy, and meaningful connection, supporting clients as they gently move through stuck dynamics and deepen intimacy—with themselves and others. In a society that often prioritizes independence over connection, therapy offers a space to feel truly understood.

You may need support for life’s challenges, want to understand yourself better, or seek new skills to help you navigate the world and your relationships. I am a licensed, BIPOC clinical psychologist trained to work with a variety of people and concerns. I can be of help to you if you are a young adult, a new parent, a woman navigating all the things, or a person of color. I can help if you are struggling with your partner, if life is unbearable because someone you love is no longer on this planet, if everything makes you anxious, if you are trying to pick up the pieces after trauma, if everything about food is challenging.

Our emotions are a biochemical reality in our bodies; we deserve to have a safe space to discover what they are telling us and how to fully express them. Oftentimes, our feelings today are based on belief systems we created in childhood to keep us safe from painful experiences. The way we made sense of our world when we were young influence and shape the quality of our relationships, how we feel about ourselves, and how we fit into the world as adults today. Sometimes this can be limiting. This whole process occurs in our body - our emotions and old belief systems that we may be unaware of ultimately guide our choices and behavior.

Have you been struggling with overwhelm as an LGBTQ person in the face of our current political climate? Being queer is especially hard right now. The news threatens to take your joy and sets your body on high alert more than usual. Old beliefs keep popping up and making you feel shame you thought you had released, and relationships just aren’t feeling meaningful or satisfying. You’re looking to try a new approach and have heard about EMDR, and you want to be able to dig in deep and see some real change.

I approach therapy as a deeply collaborative process. My approach to counseling is influenced by third-wave behavioral therapies, specifically Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP). I prioritize a deeply person-centered and empathetic approach to all sessions with clients and further am influenced by Feminist and Multicultural Therapy. I am committed to honoring a client’s strengths, background, and life contexts. I aim to create an inclusive space that is both safe for you to be yourself and secure enough to challenge yourself to grow in new ways.

As far as anyone can tell, you’ve got it all together. But on the inside you never feel good enough and your inner critic is quick to remind you of all the ways you’re failing. You are the friend that everyone depends on and confides in, but deep down you feel like no one really knows you. You secretly feel lonely and isolated. No one knows about the anxiety you’ve been experiencing, or about how you have trouble sleeping because you can’t keep your mind from racing. You feel weak when something happens that you can’t handle.

We all struggle in life at one point or another. However, reaching out for support can take a lot of strength and courage. For this reason, I strive to provide a safe, accepting, non-judgmental environment where you can openly explore your struggles and receive the support and guidance you need. Many times our past experiences have left us with wounds that become aggravated, causing difficulites in our relationships and daily lives. Together, we will reflect upon your emotional states, core beliefs and sources of distress to gain deeper awareness and skills for positive change and healing in these areas.

Hello, and thank you for visiting to learn a bit about me. My name is Zoila Mayreni López (she/they). I am a bilingual immigrant who identifies as disabled (left leg amputee), Queer (in all aspects of my being), BIPOC (Afro-Latine), R/A Polyamorous. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families. I am particularly drawn to working with people actively challenged by complex identities. Those generally drawn to working with me are struggling to function within the confines of this sick society; these people are unified by their curiosity and desire to grow beyond the bounds of internalized structures of oppression.

Prospective clients are often curious about the same thing: how it would feel to talk about hard things, together. I specialize in treating emotional injuries such as stress, burnout, and trauma (both acute and chronic), and use human but evidence-based approaches (methods listed below). When describing me, my current clients most often reflect on appreciating my "high warmth, low BS" approach. In session, I'm focused on you and your care, but I'm also conversational and expressive. Therapy often involves feeling some feelings, strategizing, science lessons, humor, and clarity.

I work with adults, especially men, who are dealing with stress, anxiety, trauma, or relationship challenges and want to understand themselves better and create real change. A lot of the clients I work with seem to have it together on the outside but feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or frustrated underneath. In therapy, we’ll take the time to understand what’s been keeping you stuck and start building tools that help you feel more in control. That might mean learning how to manage anxiety in the moment, communicate more clearly, or respond differently when something triggers you.

Therapy provides a space to process and reclaim experiences, thoughts, and emotions that may have felt stuck or weighed down by the pressures of our surroundings, cultural practices, and deep-seated personal beliefs. These barriers may be reflected in your family relationships, experiences of trauma and loss, and interactions with institutional forces. As a narrative-centered therapist, I will provide a supportive environment for you to deepen your understanding of yourself, challenge these barriers, and reframe your story in order to make empowered choices that align with your values and goals.

My ideal clients are children, ages 3-11, who are experiencing anxiety, difficulties with emotion regulation, or struggling to adjust to significant life changes, such as grief, loss, or divorce. Families typically come to my practice seeking support because they feel "stuck." They are often looking for a way to help their child navigate complex feelings that have become overwhelming for the household. My approach is two-fold: I engage children in developmentally appropriate play therapy to help them process emotions, while simultaneously holding monthly parent meetings where we talk about how to support their child at home.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
