Most clients arrive for therapy struggling with adjustment issues, mood regulation, substance use, or family dynamics issues. The goal is always to effect change that is permanent. When change is not possible, the focus shifts to better managing or coping with the struggles. This is accomplished by working collaboratively helping the clients move from where they are to where they need to be.

You might feel like you're falling behind—like no matter how hard you try, it’s never enough. Maybe you're carrying pain from the past, stuck in anxiety, or caught in a cycle of self-pressure and doubt. You're not alone—and you don’t have to navigate it alone. Therapy can be a safe place to let down the weight you've been carrying. The people I see are often navigating trauma, anxiety, and self-doubt. They tend to be thoughtful people who value connection and introspection, but struggle with a harsh inner critic. They’re eager to look inward, break old patterns, and move toward a life that feels freer and more self-compassionate.

My main priority is to create a safe, nonjudgmental, and inviting space to explore whatever it is that brought you to therapy. Your life, relationships, and experiences make you unique and it is my privilege to be able to walk alongside you in your journey. Starting therapy can feel intimidating, so I will meet you wherever you are at in your process of self-awareness and growth. My approach emphasizes authenticity, curiosity, humor, collaboration, and self-compassion to help you explore your questions. We all need reminders that our needs are just as important as others, and it is my goal to support you in that practice.

I work best with folks who are curious and want to do the good, hard work of discovering themselves. Whether it's anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, history of abuse, or an array of other stressors, life sometimes just...sucks. But, I believe that with curiosity, kindness and gentleness we can unpack some of these stressors and learn new ways of relating to them with awareness & hopefully pick up a few new tools along the way.

Do you move through life appearing calm and capable, yet inside there’s a quiet ache, a sense that no matter how much you accomplish, peace remains just out of reach? Do the echoes of childhood pain, anxiety, perfectionism, and shame whisper that you must always do more, be more? Does rest feel undeserved, joy slips away too quickly, and the old stories of not being enough still shape how you move through the world? Maybe a recent life change such as a move, a new job, or divorce have activated old wounds and you find yourself more depressed, anxious, and isolated in your own mind?

Are you struggling with over-functioning, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and burnout? If you invested in time and space to explore, heal, and grow, how might life be different? How might you be different? In the past, you have constantly prioritized others' needs and are now feeling exhausted, resentful, and frustrated. The perfect image you maintain for the outside world comes at the expense of yourself. Internally, you feel numb, insecure, lonely, and lost. You are tired of feeling this way and ready to change this unsustainable pattern once and for all.

There are times in life when the familiar stops making sense—when roles shift, identities blur, and unresolved pain rises to the surface. You may find yourself asking: Who am I now? How did I get here? What truly matters going forward?
This work isn’t about quick fixes or just managing symptoms. It’s about honest, collaborative exploration—making space for what’s been buried, and supporting you in reclaiming clarity, choice, a more authentic way of living and reclaiming authorship of your story.

Something isn't working in your relationship and you're not sure what the solution is. Maybe it's arguments about anything and everything, the aftermath of infidelity, or a growing disconnection. Most of us aren't taught how to navigate adult relationships which can leave us floundering trying to get it right. While this can feel hopeless at times, I believe in our ability to learn, grow, connect, and change. Together, we start with organizing what you're experiencing, we deepen our understanding of it, and ultimately we begin to walk toward a more peaceful, empowered, and authentic life.

The stress of everyday life can often feel overwhelming to us, creating confusion and fear. I believe that our early relationships and past experiences offer the key that can unlock the mysteries of why we often feel at odds with the world around us. I also believe the body and brain hold onto traumatic events and affect our current functioning. I approach therapy from a psychodynamic perspective, creating a safe holding environment to explore those relationships and influences. I would be honored to help you achieve your goals and assist you in creating increased contentment in your life.

It might sound odd, but many of the people who end up in my office are actually trying too hard. While striving for optimization can seem like a healthy habit—or even a necessity in today’s world—pushing too hard often signals that something deeper may be off balance. This kind of over-efforting (new word?) can drain energy and steer it in unhelpful directions.
My role is to help people better understand their own patterns. In our work together, they begin to slow down, reflect, and notice. This simple shift—paying attention rather than pushing through—often leads not to exhaustion, but to renewed energy and surprising clarity

My name is Dr. Elissa Hurand. I love what I do and believe you will feel this through my heart- centered listening and deep knowledge. As a master’s and doctorate level clinician, I have been practicing in the field of psychology since 2010, with a background in teaching yoga and mindfulness. My approach to therapy is depth-informed, recognizing what often causes distress and pain in our lives is our false self—the self that emerged long ago to ensure our early relationships with primary caregivers remained intact while the real self went underground.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
