The human need for inclusion, as well as separateness, exists in us all. In my practice with couples, I help partners identify these needs and the words that best express them. Partners can then feel more confidence discussing needs and differences with one another while traversing life’s separate and shared goals. When differences entangle into gridlock patterns, however, couple relationships can suffer conflict, avoidance, and even separation. I help partners step back from these repetitive patterns and find feeling words for their individual frustrations and unmet needs, to feel from the inside rather than project onto the other.
I work primarily with couples using Attachment Theory and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to shift from defensive patterns of approach and avoidance to shared understandings of emotional and practical needs.
I am certified for Advanced Training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT) and specialize in helping distressed partners step back from behavioral patterns of boundary intrusion and self-protecting to the underlying emotional needs that drive these behaviors. Partners can then hear and understand one another's emotional needs for love and safety.
