I am a systemic therapist with a focus on relationship whether it's the internal parts of an individual psyche (holistic/systemic, depth psychology, shadow work), relationship with others (couples, friends, family and group), place in the ecosystem (ecotherapy), or existential/spiritual (transpersonal psychology). My education has been on a psychological spectrum with my BA having a cognitive-behavioral perspective, my MA a systems perspective and post-grad, doctoral level classes a transpersonal perspective. I have a passion for healing modalities and tend to take an holistic and evidenced-based approach.

Hi, my name is Dr Richard Shaw and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Oregon, providing Professional Counseling Services for more than 25 years, currently offering office and zoom appointments. I am also an Associate Professor of over 25 years in the Graduate School of Counseling at George Fox University and an ordained minister in the Foursquare Church. I have been married for over 30 years and have two adult children. I am originally from Nebraska and in my free time, I enjoy movies, the Oregon coast and college and professional football.

My focus is to help empower you by helping you enhance your capacities and create meaningful change in your life. Clients want symptom relief, but also want to focus on problems preventing them from achieving their goals. You may want to resolve long-standing relationship or family issues and seek clarity and insight so as not to repeat negative patterns in the future. Many of my clients are suffering from occupational burnout, stress, and work/life imbalance. I work with clients in transition, due to unexpected life changes who are seeking relief and renewal.

Change is possible. A diagnosis of OCD or another anxiety disorder can be scary and confusing. It can feel like your life is defined by dread, worry, fear, and exhaustion. Much of your energy and time are likely spent trying to present to the outside world as “successful” and “having it all together”. Internally, you may feel disconnected from your core self, your innate purpose and potential, and the ability to enjoy simple moments in your life. Anxiety doesn’t have to define who you are as a human. Therapy is courageous work. I’m glad you’re here making this first step.

Therapy with me is relaxed and collaborative. I help people who are experiencing overwhelm, low mood, and anxiety find solutions to better weather life’s ups and downs. Depression, anxiety, and trauma can all lead to feelings of hopelessness and isolation. When life becomes too much, we can retreat into ourselves and shy away from our support networks. We may never have had much of a formal support network to begin with and we struggle to establish meaningful relationships due to past trauma. Or, perhaps you are struggling with vicarious trauma or burnout related to your work serving others?

With couples & families, our approach is to deepen the bond by focusing more effective communication while understanding the needs of the relationship, Individual therapy centers from life experiences of resilience & strength, redefinition of self, challenges around family history, or a recognition of new life boundaries. As we work with younger clients, we utilize interventions in our play therapy room to provide an environment open and welcoming to the needs of everyone.

As an art therapist and counselor, I am passionate about providing a compassionate, collaborative, and authentic experience for growth and healing. My approach to therapy is strengths-based, person-centered, trauma-informed and resiliency-focused with an intersectional lens. I provide individual counseling for adults ages 18 and older and have experience working with individuals to address a variety of concerns including trauma, experiences of abuse or violence, PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

With over 30 years of experience working in clinical, inpatient, and educational settings, I am passionate about supporting individuals in finding happiness and personal success. The depth of my professional background provides me with an expanded range of experience addressing individual anxiety, trauma, depression, attachment issues, ADHD, OCD, learning challenges and couples and family dynamics. Accepting new clients both in person and via telehealth. Are you a deeply emotional person? Do you get sensory overload? Somatic helps you integrate your body and emotions in a way that is not overwhelming. Parts work is about understanding yourself in a way that promotes having a positive relationship with yourself. I love to help clients know and accept themselves through gaining deeper awareness of their internal systems.
