When we do establish our intention to carry out, planting this and manifesting growth is the next step. I believe we at times have narratives we would like to change. Exploration is key, so as the catalyst for change/growth can occur and our personal journey enhanced.

I've had a psychotherapy practice in rural Pahoa for 18 years. Psychotherapy/Counseling works best when clients are met by someone who really cares AND the therapist has a wide-range of psycho-therapeutic skills and Life Experience. I work with anxiety, trauma, depression, bi-polar, grief, coping skills and other challenges. In addition to individual sessions, I offer couples counseling and mediation. Previously I've worked for the Hawaii Dept of Health, Mental Health Division; hospice patients as Director of SW at Hospice Hawaii and at Oahu Community Correctional Center.

I enjoy working with children age 10+, teens, individuals, couples, and families. We all are impacted by the families we grew up in, events we experienced and the relationships in our lives. It impacts how we view ourselves and the world around us. It determines how we respond to people and events. If you struggle with anxieties, depression, life challenges, and transitions, therapy can open new doors. I view therapy as a collaboration - walking together for a stretch to resolve issues or conflicts you would like to work on.

Welcome! In my Pahoa office, I offer in-person therapy to men, women, teens, and couples facing emotional, mental, social, and relational challenges. My approach is tailored to the individual, using humanistic, mindfulness and cognitive behavioral elements to facilitate the best outcomes. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, bipolar and personality disorders, as well as women's issues, domestic violence, substance abuse, and issues involving poverty.

I feel that therapy can be the opportunity to explore our lives on an emotional and collective level. I encourage my clients to discuss what they want to see happen in their life and work with them on developing goals. I use a combination of family structure, emotional focus and family of origin modes of therapy in my practice. I feel that therapy for some can be a vulnerable experience, and I honor that.

My ideal clients actively collaborate in a non-judgmental, respectful, compassionate, therapeutic setting to uncover and process unresolved trauma that prevents them from realizing their goals. We discuss the benefits and risks of therapy, as we develop workable solutions that are tailored to clients' personalities, and use empirical assessments to monitor clients' progress toward personal goals, increased self-awareness, and self-actualization.

When painful thoughts and emotions arise, they can make us feel paralyzed and miserable. We think about our painful experiences and feel the same agony over and over again! We worry about the future and feel a sense of dread and fear about things that have not yet happened! We want to get rid of the pain, but if we try to eliminate painful thoughts and feelings, it's like trying to plug a high pressure leak and the water keeps finding a weak spot to burst out again! What else can we do? We can accept feelings with compassion because they show us what's most important. We can observe thoughts, then act from choice instead of fear.

I approach therapy collaboratively, striving to be unbiased and nonjudgmental yet supportive and trusting. Anuhea St. Laurent is from Kāneʻohe, Koʻolaupoko, Oʻahu and currently lives in Keaʻau, Puna, Hawaiʻi with her ʻohana of five. She graduated from Kamehameha Schools Kapālama, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, completed her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology at Chaminade University and is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Anuhea began studying psychology in 2003 and working in the mental health field in 2009. She has experience helping children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity and Autism Spectrum Disorders as a Behavior Specialist, mentoring at-risk adolescents.
