How do I choose the right therapist for me? What if I don't like my therapist? Aren't all therapist the same? Research continues to show that good fit is the most important factor to a successful outcome and choosing the right clinical expert is fundamental. Not all clinicians are the same. Education, experience and clinical expertise are distinguishing factors. My long time practice focuses on treating individuals and couples who are addressing stress management, relationship satisfaction, anxiety, depression, trauma, or phase of life adjustment such as divorce, parenting, teen parent relationship or school/work challenges.

All relationships take work. But when you and your partner are in a cycle of anger, disconnection, and conflict, it feels like no amount of effort can break it. Communication feels borderline impossible: you say something, they get triggered, you get triggered, and the cycle continues. And it’s even harder to continue putting in effort to change when you don’t feel valued or heard in your relationship, especially when it feels like you’re carrying more of the load than your partner. You’re scared of what might happen if you’re not able to change this, but everything you’ve tried up until now hasn’t worked.

Making the decision to attend therapy is difficult for most people. Regardless of what you are struggling with, the decision to ask for help is often very challenging. In reality, this choice is life changing. Life no longer has to be filled with depression, anxiety, traumatic memories, emotional numbing with substances, or coping skills that just seem like they are not working. Sometimes, we just need someone to listen. Collaboratively, we can strengthen your natural skills while implementing new ones. We can overcome the barriers that block you from having the motivation and energy to reach your personal goals.

The thing you don’t name out loud… it’s heavy, and it’s yours. But the fact you can even hint at it means you’ve already started walking toward the open. That openness doesn’t reveal itself all at once. It’s more like slivers breaking through the enclosed space you find yourself in over, and over again. Some days you’ll swear you’re still in the trenches, but then you’ll notice you haven’t looked over your shoulder in a while. That’s how you know you’re closer.

I believe joys and struggles in life stem from relationships. The relationship may be with yourself as you seek to establish your identity, values, and goals. Your relationship with others, such as your parents, spouse, children, co-workers, or friends, may need to be developed, redefined, clarified, or understood. Trauma, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are a few of the things that can hinder people in building the relationships they want. I am passionate about helping individuals, women, couples, and families build the relationships that bring them a sense of belonging and satisfaction.

As you start on the path to motherhood are you feeling anxious, sad, perhaps ashamed or just not yourself? And asking yourself, why do I feel this way? It can be frustrating, draining, overwhelming, and at times heartbreaking. This is likely not how you thought it would be. It feels like it should be a natural, seamless process filled with joyous moments. Unfortunately, it's often not the reality and I am here to support you regardless of where you are in this journey. Imagine how it would feel to be the best version of yourself. To enter motherhood feeling confident, happy, and calm. Together we will get you there.

Warm, down-to-earth, experienced, effective... I bring compassion and understanding to every concern. I help clients to reduce worries, anxiety, panic, social discomfort or isolation, adjust to life transitions, soften grief and bereavement, cope with chronic illness, and to transcend past emotional injuries. I also work with individual adult clients to develop healthy relationships, to shift old patterns of relating, and to heal trust, love, trauma and loss (including pet loss). While the focus is often on current issues, understanding the influence of past experiences and relationships can be an important part of the process.

You might be reading this because you or someone else is suffering. Possibly the life you worked for is in jeopardy. Maybe you are missing out by staying on the sidelines. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, you keep finding yourself in the same place again and again…STUCK. You can break the unhealthy patterns. Unfortunately to do so you might have to experience pain and emptiness to take steps to get better. My hope is that you find the support and help you need.

My name is pronounced Renee’. Feel free to blame my parents. Since we can't separate ourselves from life's challenges, we better figure out how to face them-in ways that will make you proud of who you've become. Aside from who you choose to live life with, who you receive guidance and advice from is arguably one of the most important decisions you can make. With over 15 years of experience working with clients of all ages and backgrounds, I know both the strengths I can bring to our work together and the areas where I may not be the right fit. I value the time and resources you invest, and I am committed to matching your effort.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
