I'm always amazed as a therapist with how empathetic most clients are toward everyone but themselves. I hear things like, "my parents' divorce didn't bother me", "my mom was doing her best even if I rarely saw her", "dad wasn't in my life but it didn't affect me", or "there was abuse in the home, but my brother got the worst of it". When I remove them a little as we look at their wounding, such as role playing it being another person, most clients say amazing things like, "it's okay for this to affect you still, this was a big deal" or "you'll be okay and we can get through this". We all have an innate ability to heal.
