Seeking therapy can be the first step on a healing journey and I hope to walk alongside you as you pursue personal growth. I believe that therapy can be a great way to access some of the tools that are already within us but that we may need help employing. I understand the importance of intersectionality as a queer Black woman and therapist and can understand how necessary it is to acknowledge the impact of intersecting identities when working with clients. I use an integrative approach to help clients feel empowered to re-frame their narrative and identify and process complex emotions.

We cannot get through life without difficult times. None of us can. Whether it's a family conflict, career predicament, or personal trauma we are going to experience them. And, yet, how we handle them can make all the difference in our future and the future of those we love. I have been doing psychotherapy for a long time, both with individuals and with couples, and hope I have developed an ability to help manage these life situations. I work with people in both short-term crisis situations and longer-term therapy contexts, from their teens to their nineties.

For women, men, and couples midlife and long term infertility are life stages that can be filled with grief, confusion, transition and lack of control. My clients come to me saying, “I’m not who I used to be, and I’m not sure who I am now. Don't know how we can move forward.” I am passionate about people in their 40’s and 50’s because I believe that a “third act” is lying just ahead. It’s a stage in life that can be fulfilling, exciting and meaningful. It just doesn't always feel that way.

I work with individuals and couples who are experiencing stress, recovering from trauma, and dealing with transition. I have a warm, collaborative approach wherein you and I work together to assess how you are affected by certain core beliefs, and then begin to think about what's in your best interest. Working from a Control Mastery perspective, I believe that you have a plan to overcome what's difficult for you and my job is to help you actualize it.

I am not the type of therapist that sits in a chair and nods silently at everything you say. My approach is warm, direct and healing on multi-levels. Depending on each individual case we can explore talking your story, expanding your breath, expressing ranges of emotion or moving your body. I consider my work and the space I hold as sacred. There are many doorways into the experience of freedom and together we can find the one that fits your Self.

We begin by telling our story. We go at a slower pace than usual and we pay special attention to the emotionally important parts of the story, e.g., talking to our mother, worrying about work, conflict in a relationship, etc. Here we pause and direct our attention to our abdomen and ask, “How do/did I feel about this or that or him or her?” Then we wait. We don’t rush to answer the question with our heads, we wait for an answer to slowly arise from our bodies. We are bypassing our intellectual defenses and asking our bodies what’s really going on.

I work primarily with adults experiencing anxiety, dread, depression, self-criticism, relationship problems, symptoms of complex trauma, or difficulty during life transitions. When these feelings are acute it can feel unbearable and all we want is some relief. I work with people to address uncomfortable symptoms in the present, while also exploring their meaning and source including connections with earlier life experiences. I work well with people who are curious about the root of their symptoms and have a desire to know themselves in a deeper way. I also work well with people who are open to working with their night dreams.

I've been in private practice for over 32 years in the San Francisco Bay Area working with individuals ,couples and families seeking support for trauma, life transitions, and development. Whatever stimulus propels an individual to seek support, can be an opportunity for each person to engage more fully in their life. The therapeutic process is an organic one that involves a mutual exploration between myself and clients with the client's needs and purpose informing the process. What may seem an obstacle may be an opening when viewed from a different perspective with another,to make a difference in one's mental health.

I've been practicing psychology in Sausalito since 1996. The people with whom I work are normally functioning individuals who come in to explore issues that represent some ongoing disruptive pattern in their lives. Together, we actively engage in discourse intended to stimulate meaningful insights and reflections; as we consider possible changes that may help them to lead more genuine and integrated lives.

In my psychotherapy practice I use supportive and insight-focused approaches, together with techniques derived from cognitive behavioral therapy with the goal of helping people find their own sense of agency. My most fundamental assumption is that people are always trying to overcome the psychological obstacles that interfere with their happiness and that the therapist's job is to help identify those obstacles and suggest better ways to cope with them.

How can I find a therapist in 94965?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
