With over 20 years experience consulting with parents, preschools and day care centers I understand human development and the
family
dynamics that can impact children's ability to move forward in their development.
You spend countless hours searching "how to deal with temper tantrums", "how to make a toddler sleep" or "what's the right potty training age". Yet the advice that seems to work for everyone just isn't working for you and your child. It could be time for some individualized help. When a child is missing developmental milestones in sleep, toileting and managing emotions, the entire
family
is impacted. You want to help your child to move forward in their development and you want to feel less helpless and frustrated.

As a trained
family therapist
, I'm always aware behind that one person in the room stand the many more who love him/her.
Anxiety, Phobias and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can boycott the development and happiness of your bright, spirited and sensitive child. Leaving frustration and hurt where once prevailed a close and nurturing relationship. Using evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), scientifically-supported Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP) and parent coaching I will help your child or teen develop a more useful, curious and courageous mindset. A.K.A. a brain trained to tolerate the unknown. A skill that'll stay with them long after our work is completed.

I help clients experiencing ADHD/ executive functioning issues, self-harm, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief,
family
changes and behavior issues.
Are you worried about your child, teen or young adult but unsure how to help them? You can see something has changed in them: perhaps they seem depressed, anxious, or isolated in ways they didn’t used to be. You want them to learn skills to deal with life's challenges and resolve the issues that are holding them back. Because more than anything, you want to see your child thrive. My practice focuses on the unique needs of children 4+ through young adulthood and their families. I create developmentally appropriate, customized treatment plans using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies and art and play therapy interventions.

There are times in our life when we might feel overwhelmed and confused when trying to manage today's stressors. Fortunately, because you are seeking help, you don't have to go through it alone. Often we need guidance when navigating the challenges and feelings that come when difficulties arise. In a supportive and empathetic environment, issues such as: grief and loss, sadness/depression, anxiety, life transitions, personal growth, low self-esteem, trauma, chronic pain, ADHD difficulties, as well as child/parent struggles, can be addressed through a strength-based and solution-oriented approach.

If you are reading this now, you may be struggling with feelings or experiences that have become hard to bear and even understand. You may feel alone and as though no one seems to really get what you are going through. It may be some immediate situation or transition in life that feels extra hard to navigate, or some long-standing grief or pattern in relationships that seems to have a hold on you. You may have symptoms such as anxiety or depression, perhaps with less than optimal means of coping. Psychotherapy can help you understand and change.

I provide psychotherapy to clients ranging from young children to older adults with a wide range of issues. At some point, in most of our lives, we experience difficulty, turmoil, and/or pain in some aspect(s) of our lives; emotionally, psychologically, in relationships, or coping. I do my best to connect with and understand the people I work with on many levels. Together we identify and explore the patterns of adaptation which are no longer effective and contribute to pain and suffering. Over the many years in this profession, I have been humbled. Real change, however defined, often takes time, attention and care.

Anxiety, Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in kids can show up in big ways and leave families spiraling. Being a parent of two myself I get that we can’t always prevent our kids from struggling, but we can give them the skills to thrive in the face of life's challenges. With skill building through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), I help kids and parents develop a toolbox of evidenced based strategies to face their fears and courageously take back their lives from anxiety and OCD.

I have been in practice as a licensed psychologist for the past 28 years in Marin County where I was also born and have raised my two boys. My approach to assessment and therapy is integrative as it attempts to consider all relevant biological, psychological and environmental influences on a person’s current well-being. Sessions leave ample space for depth-oriented, psychodynamic/attachment based processing of inner struggles and vulnerabilities. They also include collaborative, practical, and hands-on problem solving as well as exploration of cognitive behavioral tools and strategies appropriate to the developmental age.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
