The goal of therapy is for you to be happy in your love and work. At the heart of it, therapy is about increasing your capacity to feel more connected with yourself and others and recognizing the internal and external forces that keep you from enjoying your life. These are powerful antidotes to anxiety and depression.

You may feel overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, or the impact of past experiences, even while functioning well in your daily life. Many of the clients I work with are thoughtful, high-functioning adults who feel emotionally stuck, on edge, or disconnected and want deeper healing rather than short-term coping strategies.

My ideal clients are individuals including children, adolescents, and adults who feel disconnected from themselves, overwhelmed by past experiences, or stuck in cycles of anxiety and self-doubt. Often, they are navigating the heavy terrain of grief, managing the daily executive functioning challenges of ADHD, or carrying the invisible weight of trauma. They might feel like different "parts" of them are constantly at war, for instance, a part that desperately wants to move forward fighting with a part that feels paralyzed by fear. They come to therapy looking for a safe harbor to process pain.

Most people I know are doing the best they can with what they know, yet keep finding themselves stuck repeating old patterns. Some people want to heal old wounds but don't know how, and they often feel unsatisfied with their relationships, their job or feel alone. We might be a good fit if you want to feel more connected to yourself and your emotions. My joy comes from helping others discover self compassion, peace with the past, self awareness, support, and connection. I help people craft lives and relationships they’re excited to show up for.

Are you feeling stuck? Asking in frustration “why am I like this?”, struggling with your emotions, pinning your identity on achievement, or knowing that you want to make different choices but not knowing how? We can discern why, and transform. While exploring I often remark "that makes so much sense!", you’re “like this” for a reason. To change it we need to understand the function it serves, cope with pain and uncertainty, and better meet the underlying need. My style is warm, non-judgmental, collaborative, and humorous. I approach therapy from cultural humility, and hope to empower you to appreciate your resilience and true self.

Your child is bright, thoughtful, and capable, but school feels harder than it should. Homework takes hours, small tasks derail the evening, and emotions seem to go from zero to 100 instantly. The inconsistency is what confuses you most. You’ve seen what they can do, which makes the struggles harder to understand. You’re not looking for excuses or quick fixes. You want clarity. You want to understand how your child’s brain works so you can support them in a way that actually helps and protects their confidence.

Have you come to an obstacle you can't see your way through on your own? Are you noticing challenges in relationships with others or with yourself? Do you have a sense there is something deeper and more to life. Do you long for happiness and fulfillment? In your life so far, you may have had to do a lot of things on your own. But there are some things we can't do alone. A big step in healing is becoming ready to let in support. You may be in a dark night of the soul, which requires a form of therapy that goes deeper.

Without meaning and the chance to therapeutically practice new insights and behaviors, we may suffer unnecessarily during times of high stress, trauma, or in daily life. Feelings may become an overwhelming flood of dread, sorrow or numbness; thinking becomes confused, panicky, and self-critical; joy, spontaneity and self-trust may feel lost. Together we can make good use of your strengths, symptoms and external challenges. Through exploring and deepening our understanding and trust in your own inner world, dignity and liveliness may be restored even under the most challenging or enduring of circumstances, illnesses or problems.

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process. It thrives on curiosity, creative play, strong questions, and most importantly, close listening and full attention. Being present, open, and available are critical to a successful outcome. Working together, clients and I explore areas of challenge and what changes or outcomes are desired. Clients develop a deeper understanding of and empathy for themselves. They become more creatively engaged in the direction of their lives. It is an exciting and at times frightening undertaking. One that brings with it a heightened sense of aliveness.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
