My therapeutic approach focuses very much on the here-and-now. While events in your past certainly played some role in your present distress, the past can not be changed. I believe the primary goal of psychotherapy is to teach you the tools you need to change the current patterns that are causing you problems. I also have special training and experience working with children and adolescents. While the techniques used with youths are obviously different from those used with adults, the goal remains the same: to provide the tools that will bring about positive change.

Your life often feels like a relentless battle between motherhood, marriage challenges, relationship difficulties, work issues and not living the life God intended for you. Some mornings, you are deafened by the silence of last night's unresolved conflict. You ponder getting out of bed or just throwing the covers over your head so it all goes away. Isolation & panic start creeping back up. Anxiety, fear & exhaustion are your new, uninvited best friends. You long for deeper connections, stronger boundaries, authentic communication and nurturing self-care, but you lack the skills to change things & doubt how it could ever be better.

I believe that emotional healing can be brought about within the framework of relationships, so in my therapy sessions I work to create a safe environment where clients can work through issues in their lives that may be hindering them from reaching their true potential. I believe it's possible in therapy to gain insight into our deepest desires to learn and grow, and to develop successful communication skills. These skills in turn help us develop and maintain successful interpersonal relationships with others.

I enjoy working collaboratively with my clients, helping each to develop the specific and unique tools necessary to cultivate a more satisfying and fulfilling life. My approach is to first actively listen, gaining a thorough understanding of the history of the situation and symptoms, the presenting challenges, and any other influences such as family history, cultural or racial factors, chronic illness, and economic stressors. We will then work together to identify treatment goals and ways to reach them. I work with a broad spectrum of clients ranging in age from 16 and above, offering individual, couples, and family therapy.

Imagine it’s 3 AM, and you’re lying awake, haunted by an aching emptiness. Your heart pounds, lodged somewhere between your chest and your throat, as you long for someone to offer guidance on your broken heart. The absence of your loved one overwhelms you, filling every room you walk through with a sense of loss and sadness. The pain is consuming, and concentrating on anything feels impossible. Well-meaning friends say things like, “Just give it time,” or “Stay busy, you’ll get past this,” yet their words feel hollow.

It is difficult to admit that we need help....I get it. But receiving help is actually a great start to a more satisfying life. I have learned this in my work with adults, adolescents, and couples. Admitting that help is needed is the first and most important step. I am a psychologist, marriage family therapist, and psychoanalyst with more than 20 years of experience. I relate to my patients with empathy and insight. This is a collaborative approach to therapy.

I specialize in working with teens. Life consistently requires us to adjust and that is hard. Are you struggling in your relationship or in your ability to communicate with your spouse, teen or parents? Do you often find yourself wondering what you can do to help yourself or a loved one? At times nothing seems to work. Reaching out to a therapist can be scary and I realize there are many options. Anxiety, depression, low confidence/self esteem, anger issues, decision making, mood disorders, poor communication skills, addiction and behavioral issues are some of the things I can help with.

Are you a therapist looking for your own therapist? It can be quite the challenge, especially when you "have the insight, "know the coping skills," or have had poor experiences with past therapists. As an experienced relational therapist, I help clinicians go deeper in their own work. You might be struggling with complex trauma, substance use, or anxiety. You may have discovered your cognitive awareness doesn't inherently resolve shame or fear. I offer a compassionate and attuned experience rooted in exploring your tender issues. My goal is to provide meaningful witnessing to reconcile challenging inner conflicts with care.

Taking the first step toward improving one's mental health is the most difficult. Individuals suffering from trauma, anxiety and depression need the support of a professional who can help guide them through the uncertainties of life. I view psychotherapy as a collaborative process that promotes growth and the potential for success. I believe that with the right support, individuals can go on to live fulfilling lives.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
