Movement and healing are possible! Sometimes we get stuck. I love working with people who desire to experience freedom from the impact of old wounds and unsatisfying relationship patterns. I provide short and long term therapy for people who are desiring to process trauma or disturbing life events, such as accidents, sudden loss of loved ones, and past abuse. I also work with people who desire to navigate life transitions well, examine unhelpful patterns in their life that get in the way of thriving, and experience relief from anxiety. I am certified in Perinatal Mental Health (pregnancy and postpartum) and love supporting parents.

If you’re looking for a therapist who shows up in a deeply human and supportive way someone who walks alongside you rather than positioning themselves as the expert I may be a great fit. I believe therapy works best when it feels like a collaborative, safe space where you can explore and grow at your own pace. My approach blends Person-Centered care with evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy. I tailor each session to meet you where you are, fostering authentic connection and meaningful progress.

Life can feel complicated, and at times it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from yourself. Stress, anxiety, self-criticism, or unresolved experiences can weigh heavily and make it hard to move forward. You may be doing all the “right things” but still not finding the clarity, balance, or sense of peace you’re looking for. I work with adults who want to better understand themselves, build effective coping strategies, and create meaningful change in their lives. My practice is LGBTQIA+ affirming, and I strive to create a safe, inclusive space where all parts of your identity are honored and respected.

Hi! I'm Esther, I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) based in San Diego, CA, and I currently provide therapy in person and via Telehealth. I work with different populations and age ranges and specialize in treating trauma, life transitions, grief, anxiety, and depression. Over the years, I’ve learned the most important aspect of therapy is the chance to be truly seen & heard without judgement. I recognize the importance of representation in mental health, and I hope to offer a safe space that promotes comfort and helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health services.

Everything is different now. Since your cancer diagnosis, your entire life has been turned upside down. The future that once felt so bright and full of potential now seems dark and frightening. Not long ago, your schedule was packed with dinners, dates, and vacations. Now, your calendar is all doctor appointments and hospital visits. The physical exhaustion and side effects of treatment pale in comparison to the emotional toll. You’re constantly wracked with fear over your illness. Loved ones offer support, but they don’t understand what you’re going through. You wonder if you’re going to feel this scared and lost forever.

During my 40 plus years as a therapist I’ve help clients suffering from anxiety, depression, and dysfunctional relationship. Many come seeking relief from a life that’s not working for them. My gentle, accepting nature and use of lighthearted humor enables them to discuss painful experiences and serious problem. This leads in recovery from grief, the letting go of anger, and replacing social anxiety with a sense of confidence and self-worth. I guide couples in learning to share experiences rather than finding faults, in understanding and appreciating their partner’s struggles as they help each other heal and grow together again.

I offer a flexible and collaborative working relationship with each client in therapy, including meeting an individual where they're at to facilitate awareness, relief, and support the process of change. The relationship between a therapist and a client is an important one and can often be one of the richest, transformative parts of the therapeutic work.

My goal is to help you uncover your true potential and find more helpful ways of living. I offer a collaborative and client-centered approach tailored to each of my clients individual needs and cultural backgrounds to help attain the personal growth you're striving for. Your life experiences and history contribute to your individual uniqueness. Sometimes it's helpful if your therapist has a base knowledge of aspects of your culture so you don't have to explain everything. Between cultural elements of the LGBTQ community, to intersectionality experiences for persons of color, my background and training aid in this understanding.

I have successfully coached healthcare workers through burn out by creating space for healing through acknowledgement and release of the stress and trauma stored in their body. Letting go of these negative experiences, strengthens their connection to others and brings clarity to their passion and purpose. I have also led trainings on topics such as emotion regulation, conflict resolution and effective communication. I created and led various support groups and trainings related to grief, chronic pain, imposter syndrome and burnout.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
