As we wonder how to navigate life, we may face several obstacles and challenges that can seem overwhelming or unbearable. As a Mental Health Professional I am here to support people on how to successfully keep themselves afloat. I received my Bachelors degree in Psychology in 1997 from the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico, and after a couple of years treating people of all ages I decided to move to California to complete graduate school. I graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology, with emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University in 2006 and I have been licensed since 2012.

Give yourself permission to be vulnerable by putting yourself first. Negative and highly-critical self-talk, especially for gay men, is the root of many of our problems and addictions. You may feel “less-than” others, think poorly of yourself, or are unsure how to get your needs met. I can help you to shed light on where this inner-critic is coming from, how to quiet it, and help you rebuild your relationship with self/others. Next, we can develop tools to manage anxiety and depression, embrace your sexuality, develop a healthier relationship to sex/porn, heal infidelity, integrate love and sex, or improve your relationships.

Are you facing life's complexities and challenges? I'm here to help. As a therapist, I support clients in addressing a range of issues—whether they are current or rooted in the past. I firmly believe that the relationship we have with ourselves is foundational to improving the quality of our lives. That is why I work with clients in helping them explore aspects of themselves that may be interfering with their growth and development. Oftentimes this can manifest in the form of unhelpful behaviors, unhealthy ways of coping, or clinical disorders. Whatever it may look like, we can work through it together.

You're here because you've been thinking about therapy for a while. It takes time to recognize that we are unhappy with the course of our lives and relationships and that meaningful change is even possible. There are reasons why you are feeling the way you are, and we can uncover those reasons and create new paths going forward. In our work together I'll create a safe place for us to explore these feelings and assist you in sifting out those thoughts about self that work for you from those that don't.

I work with adults, children, teens, and families to address relational conflicts, behavioral and academic problems, and general family dysfunction. I also support parents, and work with them to better understand the underlying causes of their children's acting-out, self-harming, and/or self-isolating behaviors.

Are you looking to get to the root of the issue? Maybe you’re starting to recognize patterns and identified triggers that may have stemmed from childhood and/or relationship trauma. My ideal client is curious about themselves and reflective as I use an insight-oriented approach to help recognize patterns and process where they have stemmed from. I use a narrative theoretical orientation, believing that after we’ve understood ourselves using compassionate lens, we have the power to unlearn our patterns that no longer serve us, and ultimately, re-author our narrative.

Our relationships are the greatest treasures we have in life. When we feel disconnected in our relationship with ourselves and others, we are more prone to experiencing isolation, dysfunction and pain. While our pain can be a great teacher, feeling stuck and alone on the journey of life can feel hopeless at times. My goal is to walk with you through the healing process and support you in restoring life in your relationship with yourself and others. With a holistic approach to therapy, addressing the needs of the body, mind and soul are vital for restoring connection as we walk together through the healing process.

I don't just like people, I appreciate people. I truly appreciate those who have suffered traumatic events and/or critical incidents (or years of them) and keep going. Walking alongside those who are hurting is my life focus. I am a retired law enforcement officer and have extensive experience working with people in crisis and chaotic situations. Though I never served in the military myself, my family has a very deep military history and there are many parallels between the careers. It is very important for military and first responders, including dispatchers and emergency room personnel, to have a support system in place.

Whether life is going well or you are struggling to feel well, therapy could be a helpful and powerful tool in moving forward. Finding the right therapist, however, could be overwhelming. With investments of energy, time, and money, it is important to select a therapist with whom you feel comfortable—someone that "gets" you and in whom you have trust and confidence. I enjoy helping adults understand their barriers and strengths to help them meet their goals in the various aspects of their lives, such as relationships, work, school, and health.

Life can be hard. Especially for teens, parents, and adults feeling overwhelmed & disconnected with the world around them. It’s common to struggle navigating the pressures of school, work, relationships and the endless list of expectations. Understandably, many learn to shut-down, avoid, get angry, or find various unhelpful means to escape. This can lead to intense feelings of regret, poor self-esteem, guilt, or shame. When left untreated, it can create long-term struggles such as depression, anxiety, addiction and relationship stress.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
