Finding the right counselor can be a difficult task. Therapists are a lot like shoes, there are so many to choose from. Some will fit you and some won’t, but once you find the pair that fits just right, then you can run faster than ever before. That is why it is helpful to use the first few sessions to “try on” the therapeutic fit with a new counselor and see how it feels. In my office, the first few sessions I focus on trying to understand more of your story and where you’re at, then to assess together how therapy can be most helpful so we make sure you’re getting what you’re looking for out of therapy.

My number one concern as your therapist is to provide you with a safe space to work on your most difficult problems. I will always be respectful, sensitive, and compassionate. I care about you and understand the enormous frustration you are feeling about having a problem that persists no matter what you do. I believe lasting change and wellness are possible for people with complex and severe problems. I have learned that most unwanted behaviors and symptoms can change quickly when the obstacles that prevent wellness are properly understood and addressed.

Finding a therapist you connect with can make all the difference in your progress in therapy.  I have found that the bredth of my knowledge drives the depth of my work.  I pull from my love of reading, philosophy, history, neuroscience, and well timed humor to help drive a point home. I often hear from my clients that they know they will be challenged but cared for when working with me. Whether it is diffucult struggles, life transitions, mental health battles, existential turmoil, or goal setting, I'm here for you and your loved ones. I genuinely consider it my life's work.

Immediate openings. Going through painful experiences is part of being human, and it is something we can all relate to in our own personal way. Sometimes the consequences of these painful or traumatic experiences can be carried with us for several years or a lifetime. So whether you are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief/loss, struggles in your relationships, or thoughts of suicide, there is healing, and there is relief.

Since childhood, I have strived to be a good child. At home, school, and church, I sought the recognition and praise of others. Lacking the courage to be free from the judgment and opinions of others, I always evaluated myself through their eyes. This led me to feel perpetually inadequate and insufficient. With others at the center of my life instead of myself, I naturally felt a sense of depression and emptiness and did not feel excited or eager to start each new day. From a young age I felt very little attachment to life due to feeling like something was so wrong with me and that I deserved to feel this way

There's an intuitive sense within us that knows when it’s time to heal; time to fully process and release the old wounds, and thus create the genuine space for new things to grow. Relationships matter deeply – including our relationship with ourselves. I work with clients who have already begun to listen to themselves and know it’s time to take a deeper healing journey inward, make genuine life changes and ultimately increase their capacity for healthy, authentic connection with others. I work collaboratively and compassionately to empower my clients to sift through the difficult pieces that have historically gotten in the way.

I take a holistic approach to addressing therapy that focuses on helping you to understand and embrace all parts of you and live and authentic life. My ultimate goal is for you to learn to trust yourself and your body and to feel like you are worthy of being loved and treated with respect. Treatment with me tends to be relatively short-term as we purposefully work to understand what makes you feel the need to repress your emotions, how this may connect to your depression or relationship problems, and specifically creating experiences that help you are worthy to live, to love, and be yourself.

One of the most important protective factors against most mental health concerns is having a support system full of safe and genuine relationships. I believe that the quality of the relationships you have with others and with yourself ultimately impacts your quality of life. I can be but one of those pillars of support as I help empower individuals and families to take control of their own life and make of it what they so desire! I want to provide a safe space where you can unlearn and rethink the unsafe behaviors/thought processes that have kept you safe in the past but continue to hold you back from realizing your full potential.

Young adulthood is an exciting time, but it can also be an overwhelming experience. Many young adults experience social anxiety as they focus on new friendships and dating. Others stress about surviving college or committing to a career path. Faith issues become a source of concern for some. For those who are married or in a relationship, connecting with another person emotionally and intimately can be a struggle. Creating a new identity as a young adult can also reawaken old problems from past abuse/traumas, depression, self-damaging behaviors, and scrupulosity/OCD.

Authentic connection offers freedom to express our inner world, heal open wounds, and make meaning of life experiences. At times, our exhaustion, loneliness, hurt, worry, and fear can contribute to relational distress or our struggle to recognize our inner strength. In therapy, I work to provide opportunities to heal your wounds and create a space to build, restore, and foster connections with yourself and others.

In a world where technology makes it possible to learn about virtually anything and anyone, it can be surprisingly difficult to learn about ourselves and our loved ones. This is where the beauty of the therapeutic journey lies. I have a particular passion for marrying empathy with evidence-based practices to support clients in working through issues of shame, addiction recovery, and building self-compassion.

I can help you begin to accept how wonderful of a person you are and who you can become. I believe that you are a wonderful person and that we all are. However, we tend to reject ourselves and that can create feelings of depression and anxiety. We can achieve self-acceptance by first discovering where this rejection came from and making small adjustments to the way that we view our worlds. I have a very special place in my heart for those who struggle with pornography addiction. I can work with you to remove shame and guilt and free yourself from the cycle of addiction.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in 84601?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
