You may be feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, and defeated. These feelings and the issues they stem from often stop us from expressing ourselves, connecting to others, and feeling grounded within ourselves. I get how lost this all can feel, which is why I work to help you regain a sense of empowerment in your life.

I value and celebrate individuals who come all walks of life. I believe there are strengths and perspectives to be found in the life experience we face each day. There are many pieces and parts that make us who we are; our life history, our race, gender, gender expression, age, sexual identities, abilities, religious beliefs, and spiritualities. Pieces that are apart of us, but not always in harmony. I believe as we acknowledge, explore and embrace these conflicts, we can find a new meaning to our suffering, new ways of coping, and a new perspective on life.

Steven was drawn to the field for personal reasons, but eventually found that he had a knack for holding space for people and allowing them to be present as their truest selves. He is a former member of the Queer Therapist’s Guild of Utah, and has worked closely with the kink community in Chicago. An important lesson Steven wants people to learn is that better mental health is a slow, thoughtful, and intentional process. Thinking your way to a better way of living isn’t possible. You have to make choices, and live them, in order to improve things. The purpose of therapy isn’t happiness, but acceptance of the ups and downs of life.

We all have an inherent need to make sense of our lives. Psychotherapy addresses this by becoming aware of our unconscious (unaware) patterns. Freud coined the term "repetition compulsion" by which we can unknowingly repeat past experiences. In essence, we want to change but cling to what's familiar. Long-term psychotherapy is my preference as it provides the necessary time and safety for these dynamics to emerge and therefore create freedom if desired.

Society often tells us that we should have the answers for everything and showing any sign of struggle is a sign of weakness. I believe showing that you are struggling is a strength and that is it unrealistic to believe we can do it all on our own. Humans are built for connection, not solitude. Life can be full of beautiful and fun moments, and sometimes life can cause anxiety or stress as well that we may not know how to best handle.
