I specialize in helping people respond more effectively to painful feelings, bothersome worry, and upsetting memories. The frantic feeling of anxiety, emotional roller coaster of relationship stress, or sadness of depression don't have to be part of your life forever. Sometimes even our best efforts to fix things miss the mark and leave us stuck in a rut. While harsh thoughts and tough feelings may seem like they have a grip on your life, therapy can often help reduce your struggle, refocus on what's most meaningful to you, and develop a healthier relationship with yourself and others.

I know finding a good therapist can be challenging. Without a direct referral, you may feel you don't have a clear direction. Since 1987 I have helped others overcome challenges in order to live a happier, more fulfilling life. Here is one client's experience ... "I needed help, hope and healing ... Dr. Steven Chen's congenial manner and professional expertise created an atmosphere that assisted my healing and wholeness."

You might be feeling stuck in patterns you don’t fully understand—or ones you’ve tried to change but keep coming back to. Maybe substances have become a way to cope, take the edge off, or get through the day, even if part of you is starting to question it. You’re not alone in that—and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. I work with teens, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use. My approach is collaborative, non-judgmental, and grounded in creating a space where you can be honest about what’s really going on—without shame.

I believe healing is all about connection and integration. As a teen or adult, traumatic events, difficult emotions, or living as a marginalized person in our societal structures can leave us feeling defeated, isolated, and/or hopeless. Sometimes we just feel stuck in life. With a client-led approach, we can use a variety of interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to process and heal these parts.

“There are 3 ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.” — Fred Rogers - I’ve wanted to help people for as long as I can remember, but my path to becoming a therapist took shape in high school as I grew curious about family dynamics and emotions—especially in environments where many struggles went unspoken. Raising children as a single parent and facing challenges at home deepened my empathy and passion for supporting healing, connection, and hope.

I believe we all have different parts within us. Some that hold pain, some that try to keep us safe, and others that hold our strengths and a desire to grow. I aim to create a space where clients can explore these parts with curiosity and compassion, helping them move toward healing, deeper self-understanding, and emotional balance. I have experience working with teens and adults of all ages navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, identity exploration, and those impacted by domestic violence.

My therapy style is based on three principles: Awareness, Discovery, and Integration. I approach my clients holistically. My intention is to explore their troubles without judgment or a specific agenda. I believe that the problem always contains the seeds of its own resolution, and I trust my clients to know what is ultimately best for them. My clients do well in therapy when they practice curiosity, patience, and friendliness towards their own troubles. Over the years I have tended to focus on mood disorders, anxiety disorders, addictions, trauma, and relationship issues.

I work with individuals who have experienced trauma, are struggling with anxiety and depression, or are just feeling overwhelmed with the emotions and stress of the human experience. Using effective modalities, such as EMDR and IFS, together we uncover the root cause of distress and work to resolve issues. My clients learn the neuroscience of how the mind, heart and body are interdependent parts of our complex physiology, and use that knowledge to develop practical, tangible tools that create lasting changes. I aim to empower clients to take charge of their wellness so that therapy is not an endless endeavor.

I work well with people who need help becoming clearer about what they personally think, feel, or believe, as well as what may be going on between you and other people. Often, conflicts on these topics manifests as depression, anxiety, & addictive patterns, all of which stand in the way of a person experiencing their own potential, and maintaining fulfilling relationships. The therapy I offer is helpful for those interested in gaining clearer perspectives on their own underlying patterns that contribute to recurring emotional and relational pains. And from there, collaborating to create practical ways forward towards transformation.
