It takes a lot of strength and personal fortitude to come to therapy, and I know it can be an uncomfortable and daunting process. Just getting yourself through the door is a huge win, and our best looks different every day. I believe building a strong relationship is at the core of a therapeutic and healing space, and the client is the expert of their own experience. I work to create a safe, affirming, and nonjudgmental space to work collaboratively in exploring whatever might be going on.

As humans, we are always changing. I specialize in working with adolescents, adults, and couples who are ready to take charge of their own change; those who want to ensure that they are getting closer to the best version of themselves. Too often, we feel that the world has taken control over us, and our story is being written for us. However, I do not believe that this has to be the case; you CAN take back your life, and I am excited to partner with you on that journey!

I have been a therapist for many years. I feel that being a part of someone's life journey as they ask questions and work to make sense of the puzzle of their life is a sacred experience. I never make the mistake of thinking that I have all the answers, especially as it pertains to another's life. But I know from my own life's journey how important it can be to have someone that you trust "walk" with you when life is difficult and confusing. In terms of my education, I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Social Work at Colorado State University and my Master's Degree in Social Work at the University of Kansas.

Most of my training resided in outpatient mental health clinics, non-profit organizations, and private practice. My therapeutic interests include the areas of mindfulness, family issues, child and adolescent development, and clinical areas of anxiety, depression, emotional/sexual abuse, and trauma. I have gained valuable experience facilitating art therapy groups for children struggling with social skills as well. I believe in giving children a voice as well as adults and providing a safe space to express themselves. My approach is client and family-centered, focusing on evidence-based therapies, such as CBT and DBT.

Sometimes we need help navigating obstacles, emotional wellness, or stress. We struggle to cope with burnout, depression, grief, substance abuse, or traumatic/significant life event(s). Perhaps we don’t know what we want—we only know what we don’t want. That's enough to get us started on a path to happier-ness. I believe Locard's exchange principle— that “every contact leaves a trace”—is true of personal & professional experiences. We leave part of ourselves behind and take something with us in every encounter or event. Therapy can help us honor that process, keep what is meaningful, and let go of what no longer serves us.

Do you ever feel like you don’t have the space or time to breathe? Like you’re in survival mode more than thriving? Taking the first step to look for a therapist is a brave decision that I applaud you for. In working together, we can explore the difference between where you are and where you want to be. You can expect to be welcomed into a safe and nonjudgmental environment. I believe the most important aspect of participating in therapy is developing a supportive and trusting relationship with your therapist where you can feel free to explore your thoughts and feeling without fear of judgement.

Talking about sex, relationships, and intimacy can be incredibly difficult. Throughout our lives many of us have been confronted with fear and shame-based messages, inaccurate and harmful information, and often problematic ideas regarding sexuality. These experiences can leave us feeling confused or ashamed, ultimately impacting our ability to tap into our full and authentic selves. Exploring these issues in a therapeutic setting with a trained, sex-positive therapist can be life-changing. A sex-positive framework means that I affirm all consensual sexual activity (or lack of sexual activity) as positive, healthy, and pleasurable.

If you are thriving, surviving, or anywhere on the continuum in-between, I believe in the value of support and connection along the way. I like to provide a space that can meet you where you are on your journey. Counseling can hold space for empathy, support, and validation while at the same time creating accountability, clarity, and direction. Working with clients over the last 15+ years has shown me that we all have a unique story that has led us to where we are currently. We all have great strengths and it is those exact qualities that often lead us to our greatest struggles.

You’re struggling with past painful experiences impacting your current relationships & preventing you from living life on your terms. Past therapists with traditional, rigid & impersonal approaches were not helpful for you; leaving you feeling that nothing will ever help or change. I believe healing is possible & therapy incorporating an understanding of oppressive systems we navigate can provide a space to heal. Challenging internal messaging rooted in trauma & systems of oppression can help turn off the auto-pilot or get off the merry-go-round to live a life of meaningful choice, authenticity, connection, belonging & joy.

This is an incredibly beautiful and complex time to be alive. It is easy for those of us who care deeply to become overwhelmed with all the suffering and chaos that surrounds us. The world needs healers and dreamers now more then ever. If we want to heal the world, then we must first offer that same love to our own hearts. I feel passionate about finding creative ways to keep our hearts open for the pain of the world without shutting down.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Fort Collins?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
