Have you had some of these experiences? "Growing up, we were taught that our business had to stay in the family home. In African American families, this is not only a matter of decorum, it is a rule about safety- safety that is contingent on you being less yourself, and therefore, it is also about shame" (Burke 44).  Or are you living in denial about what you went through or experienced often times just to survive and get through life, or because you never were taught how to express and process your emotions? Burke, T. (2021) You are your best thing. New York, NY: Random House Publishing Group.

Finding an affirmative therapist can be a difficult & complex process. For many of us, living as our authentic selves can be challenging. Sometimes there are multiple barriers & difficult decisions ahead. You don’t have to navigate it all alone. Whether gender identity or sexuality is a focus of treatment or you're dealing with other unrelated things, a therapist with a solid knowledge base & understanding of your needs & background is crucial. Many clients work with me because of my expertise & 10+ years of experience, or because they prefer working with a therapist who has first-hand knowledge of trans/queer identities.

Hi! I am a bilingual therapist with over 20 years of experience. In 2000, I finished my Counseling education at Arizona State University. For the first few years, I worked in an in-patient mental health facility. Over time, I was more drawn to outpatient work and began starting my own Private Practice in 2006 called Life Transitions Counseling. Recently, I have spent time traveling the world working as a Military Family Life Counselor, aiding in the mental health care of our service members and their family members.

Life's messy and complicated, and you weren't as prepared as you would have liked for the curveballs. Important relationships in your life have become strained, or you experienced something difficult that you can't seem to find a place for in your mind. You might find yourself struggling with restlessness and irritability. It feels like you're putting on a happy face when you're really just drained, or you're exhausted from having arguments with your loved ones all the time. How your problems express themselves in your life may look different than it might for someone else, and those distinctions are really important.

I enjoy working with people who identify as having Autism/on the spectrum, ADHD/neurodiverse, queer, who identify as male, female, or anywhere in between or outside of that binary. We would work well together if: you are hoping to learn, to grow, to experience the present moment, and question your thoughts. I don't believe in pushing people to disclose if they don't want to. I work within a framework of consent and open-heartedness at all times. I want you to feel safe when you are with me and to learn how to hold that space for yourself as well. Please check out my website at mountainmeadowllc.me for more about me.

Carol Burnett once said, "Only I can change my life. No one can change it for me." I firmly believe that each of us has the capability to make changes in our lives to be a better, happier, and more capable version of ourselves. Therapy is about working together to find this version - whether it be changing one's thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, or ideas to overcome issues that might involve trauma, fractured relationships or negative life experiences.

In the past twenty seven years of practice, I've come to deeply understand that we become who we are from two sources: our relationships and experiences. The beliefs we hold about our limitations, potential, and life's possibilities spring from our interpretations (and misinterpretations) of life events and from the people surrounding them. I help clients unpack their past and present experiences so they may understand how these are woven together; to heal self-judgements and negative beliefs that come from their past; and create compassionate, loving, and empowered relationship with themselves, and others.

If you're dealing with a big change in life, whether having a loved one pass, starting a new job, or just adjusting to a new city, dealing with change is my specialty. Having completed coursework for a PhD in Depth Psychology, I am skilled at working with a variety of issues that I am happy to discuss with you. What sets me apart from others isn't so much the types of issues I work with, but how we work with one another.

*I offer teletherapy to clients in California, Nevada and Colorado. I offer in-office visits in Sacramento and San Francisco when allowed by local ordinance and client comfort.* Sometimes we expect far too much from ourselves. Each client is invited into a space where there is no expectation and where they are free to be themselves, without fear of judgement or misunderstanding. Adults can sometimes struggle to find space to hold compassion for themselves. Couples (and all variants of relationship structure) can also use a nonjudgmental time and space to feel heard, while building tools for communication.

How can I find a therapist in 80216?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
