We are all unique members of humanity working towards a feeling of wholeness and acceptance. We all face many challenges in meeting these needs, be it anxiety, depression, addiction, or struggles with adapting to life’s many changes. These experiences are normal and connect us to our higher selves and humanity as a whole. However, they can hold us back in unhealthy patterns. Talking and exploring who we are, what our goals are, and what we hope to be is a necessary step in becoming complete even as we are ever changing and ever evolving.

Schedule instantly through my website link in my profile! Julia Spenadel, LPCC, ATR-P is the owner and psychotherapist of Julia Spenadel, Counseling and Art Therapy. I began my career as a makeup artist, helping people express themselves outwardly, but eventually felt called to support people in a deeper way. That calling led me to art therapy, where self-expression, mindfulness, and compassion intersect. If you live with neurodivergence, anxiety, or the burnout that comes from managing overwhelming demands, you likely feel like the world doesn’t fit the way your brain works. My approach is person centered and trauma-informed.

Nothing seems to be working, as the day’s pass you noticed a disconnect. The relationship is becoming unfamiliar. Your partner no longer feels like your partner. Arguments are more common than compliments and toxic exchanges seem like the norm these days. The stress is starting to affect other aspects of your life. The relationship with yourself seems more like a distant memory. You could use a vent session with someone who gets it. whether you're arguing more with your partner or constantly yelling at the kids. Do you find yourself wondering what happened to the laughter and love? Where did the relationships take a detour?

Matthew Schilz is the owner and psychotherapist at MindWell, LLC. Do you feel like you’re constantly fighting thoughts of self-doubt and criticism? Your inner critic is constantly patrolling your thoughts and actions, replaying memories, and ruminating on mistakes. Our inner critics arise in times we don’t have the resources to cope with what is happening around us. Even while friends, family, and colleagues may offer words of encouragement and praise, your inner critic remains loud. I work with folks who want to redefine this experience and untether from the weight of self-judgment, shame, and inner conflict.

As a LCSW my journey in the realm of therapy began with a passion for facilitating transformative change in the lives of individuals and couples. I embarked on this path, earning my master's degree driven by a desire to empower others in navigating life's challenges and rediscoveries. My professional odyssey has led me through diverse settings, from community-based environments to the intimacy of private practice. In each setting, I've had the privilege of walking alongside individuals and couples as they journey through transitions, confront relationship dynamic, wrestle with self-esteem and embark on the path of self-discovery.

My clients are often thoughtful, high-functioning adults & couples who appear to have it together but feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected inside or in their relationships. Many come seeking help for relationship struggles, anxiety, trauma, or the pressures of demanding lives. I also work with many men who want a place where they can speak openly & gain clarity about their emotions, relationships, & direction. I provide a warm, thoughtful space where we slow down, understand the patterns shaping your life, & develop practical tools for meaningful change, helping you move forward with greater confidence, balance, & connection.

I know how hard it is to start therapy and the hesitation you may have to talk about your personal struggles with someone you don't know. But I believe, in life, we all need guides to help navigate the chaos and while we love the people closest to us, they have their limitations in how they can support. Life can bring intense, confusing experiences that can leave us struggling with how to cope or find words to describe what we're going through. In my practice, you can create a space to explore and bring awareness to difficult patterns you want to change, stress you don't know how to relieve, or thoughts that keep holding you back.

People living with chronic illnesses often can be neglected by healthcare systems. Life gets turned upside down by the onset of a chronic illness. It affects every part of a person's life from their work to their home to their sense of who they are. Chronic illness is a serious adjustment that often needs extra support that healthcare systems don't provide.

I practice person-centered therapy, which means that I aim to create a therapeutic environment of empathy, acceptance, and authenticity. During sessions, I give suggestions about techniques to try and skills to practice, but I believe my clients are the experts on their lives and what works best for them. My goal is to empower my clients to determine how they want to move forward rather than telling them what to do. I strive not to judge my clients for their actions; instead, I help them uncover the underlying thoughts and motivations behind their behaviors.

I know the idea of therapy can be scary, overwhelming, and even intimidating. I absolutely understand and acknowledge the feeling of awkwardness that some may have toward therapy. I am passionate about working with individuals who have concerns around stress, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, trauma, relationships, grief, and life transitions/work-life balance. Support may look different for each person, while some may want to focus on building coping strategies, others may seek a deeper healing process. One of our first steps will be building awareness of your needs, the change you want in your life, and identifying your goals.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
