You want to appear as if you have it all figured out and that you are "ok", but deep down you are struggling with self-worth, coping, anxiety, conflict, and a clear direction in life. Everyday leaves you feeling overwhelmed, drained, and unsure about your roles and place in this world. Being a teenager, adulting, parenting, and caregiving is so much harder than you imagined. You feel so alone in your struggle, and you’re ready to make a change. You’re ready to start honoring yourself and your needs, even when it is hard. Most of all, you’re ready to do things differently, and you know the power to do that starts with you.

I have been practicing mental health counseling for over 14 years. I hold licenses in Texas for Professional Counseling and Chemical Dependency Counseling. In private practice, my passions are working with adolescents, individuals, families, and addictions. After the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, I worked on-site with other clinicians to start the first mental health clinic in Uvalde for survivors, community members, and families of the deceased. I volunteer with the Austin Police Department as a member of their victim services team, providing counseling services to victims of violent crime. www.kimbroughcounseling.com

As of 5/7/26, I am accepting new clients, in person (Austin) and online. There is nothing wrong with you. You’ve learned some patterns that made sense at the time, got reinforced by your environment and now things have gone haywire. Everything you’ve learned can be unlearned. I’m Christie, a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor with over 13 years of lived recovery experience. People come to me having tried other approaches and feeling like healing just doesn’t work for them. They leave with actual tools, a lot more self compassion and sometimes even something they didn’t expect, they start to see the good in themselves.

I believe relationships define each of us and form the foundation for our life. I work from a systemic perspective with couples, individuals, and families to create relationships that define not only who we are, but also who we desire to become. I help clients with their relationships, intimacy, connection, communication, and sexual compatibility. I work with a lot of women who have suffered from Narcissistic abuse in relationships and family of origin. I also help those who are confused in their current relationships. I enjoy helping those who have autoimmune disease and cancer redefine their sexuality, relationships and desire.

I work with high-functioning, motivated adults carrying a lot; whether in business, leadership, or life transitions. Many are parents or building new chapters in work or relationships, though I also see anyone who’s curious, reflective, and ready for growth. Therapy with me is about feeling seen, reducing mental load, clarifying what matters most, and building sustainable ways to live fully, without sacrificing your health, relationships, or sense of self.

Motherhood shifts the ground beneath you — your identity, your relationships, and your sense of self. The sleepless nights, the constant decision-making, the invisible mental load of anticipating everyone's needs before your own. The pressure to show up fully at work, be truly present at home, and somehow still feel like yourself in the middle of all of it. It adds up quietly until one day you realize you're anxious, exhausted, and disconnected from the person you used to be — left asking yourself, Why is this so hard for me? You're not broken. You're not failing. You're overloaded — and you don't have to keep carrying this alone.

Being human isn't always easy, and when life gets complicated and becomes challenging, therapy can help offer tools to navigate through a crisis while providing you a deeper exploration of yourself. Problems in relationships often come from old ways of coping that served you in the past, but now may be keeping you from feeling fulfilled and satisfied with your life. I believe our most challenging times can also be our greatest opportunity for change. Healing is possible, and therapy is a journey towards self-discovery where you get to explore the landscape of your own mind.

Ten years ago, therapy helped change my life. It is due to this that I find myself sitting in a therapist’s chair doing what I love! If you are here due to challenges around you that interfere with your life – I want to walk alongside you in those. Challenges like relationship hurdles, struggling communication with your partner or children, new diagnoses such as anxiety or bipolar disorder. Maybe you are new to adulthood or are in a transitional stage and feel that you do not know how to navigate your new day-to-day life. I am also trained in perinatal mental health, meaning all that pregnancy, postpartum, and infertility can bring.

I am a person-centered therapist. My aim in session is to support each client's natural ability to make changes in their life. I specialize in life transition issues. My typical client is facing a challenge that is pressing them toward change in a major life domain (work, relationships, finances, etc.). I help them uncover feelings and beliefs that secretly sabotage their decision-making process and replace them with more effective ones. Therapy with me is about getting honest about what you feel and think and using those insights to guide you toward more authentic choices resulting in a more rewarding life.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
