Welcome my friends. From my heart, I live by the adage that I will be in my own battle or someone else’s battle for the rest of my life. Our days are like the weather. Many days the sun shines, but the rains do come and sometimes a destructive storm hits hard (a divorce, the loss of a loved one, cancer, suicidal thoughts, et cetera). I have been honored to be in the field of psychology for 20 years since 2004. Through the years, more than half of my time was in the Army working with soldiers but have also worked in prisons (many extreme situations).

Are you experiencing difficult challenges in your life? Do you struggle with finding the time to take care of yourself and make positive change? Do you feel you should have all the answers yourself? Since there is no manual on handling life's problems, talking to a supportive, nonjudgmental person may be just what you are missing. I believe anyone can change and develop the skills in order to take charge of their own life. I see each individual as their own unique person and therefore will have their own unique therapy plan. Sometimes that first step can be the most difficult and I look forward to supporting you along your journey.

Therapists take on a number of different roles in their work. I predominately view my role as guide. One of the goals of this practice is to help clients discover a deeper sense of self and acceptance. Another intention of this practice practice is to help clients build and maintain the necessary tools they already have existing within themselves, and lead clients to new discoveries of living life in a more balanced and enjoyable way.

Turn your never-ending pattern of defeat with your partner into an ever-growing source of enrichment. You may feel unwanted, unvalued, rejected or unsafe in a relationship that used to be marked by love and intimacy. Do you ask yourself “I’m smart, why is this so difficult?” Or find yourself repeating patterns where you think, “I should know better?” Maybe you were identified as Gifted as a child (or your teen is gifted) and wonder why they call it "gifted" when things are hard? Do you feel you lost your giftedness when you entered high school and gifted "support" became AP classes? Then maybe you could use a guide to help you uncover and understand those things you feel you “should know” or be able to do but might not have ever been taught. Bringing yourself in line with who you want to be is one of the things therapy can do for you.

My ideal client would be where you find yourself trying to hold it together, and you may not look for help until a situation has gotten worse and its almost a crisis. That situation will significantly affect your life, and you will hit a breaking point. This might be self-esteem, anxiety, depression, adjusting to life changes, codependency, grief, health issues, or just feeling stuck. It's hard to ask for help but here you are, and what you thought might work is not working any more. You would find yourself in my office feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, confused but feeling like you had taken the first step to finding HOPE.

The populations I am a good fit for are teens and adults who are dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD, life changes, relationship issues, and ADHD. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD later in life, I especially love helping fellow neurodivergent individuals examine and reconstruct beliefs they may have developed about themselves. I also really enjoy being an unbiased support for teens and helping them discover who they are and what they want out of life in their transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
