The bad news: anxiety and depression are all around us and why wouldn't it be? Troubling news on the television, relationships in disarray, pain and suffering everywhere! Anxiety and depression keeps us from living the life we desire, from doing the things we want, and from interacting with others in a healthy manner. It frustrates us and makes us irritable. The good news: through changing our thoughts and utilizing solution based therapies, we can attack and overcome our feelings of anxiety and depression. I would love to come along side you and work together with you to help you create the healthy you that you want to be.

Life can be a full-contact sport. Your heart can get trampled. And your mind forgets it is your servant....and becomes the master of worry. Frustration engulfs your efforts to negotiate life and fear sets up permanent residency. I find that's when people tolerate a lot...when they get stuck. Stuck in life.
I have a Ph.D. in Counseling, licensed in the State of Texas as well as Nationally. I am a researcher in Emotional Intelligence and have taught in the counseling graduate programs at The University of Texas at San Antonio and St. Mary's University.

I have presented workshops on the national, state, and local levels in the areas of family relationship issues, adolescent issues, and the education of the emotionally disturbed student in public education. Please don't hesitate to call today to make an appointment.

My job is to help people live happier lives. My office is a continuing education service for all who enter. The goal for me, and hopefully for the person I am working with, is to learn from each other through the change agent of conversation. After 40 years of experience, my belief is that humans never really change until what they have done is working anymore, is broken, and/or gone. Thus change begins with loss, some small and some life ending. At these moments of transition, learning how to let go is the lesson, whether we like it or not. Whatever big change you are going through, positive or negative begins with an ending.

I enjoy helping my clients work toward change when dealing with difficult situations. My training and education have given me an understanding of cognition, memory, and learning, which directs me to favor a cognitive-behavioral approach (CBT) to counseling. CBT is based on the idea that perceptual beliefs greatly influence our behavior and emotions. I believe that effective change can be facilitated through a better understanding of how we perceive our situations.

My ideal client is sick and tired of being sick and tired; they are tired of their lives being controlled by drugs and alcohol and are looking for a better way. They need new skills, options, a support system, and someone to help them navigate through the changes they are going through. Their goals are to improve their lives and the lives of those who love and care about them. What they want is a better life, to be happier, to be healthier, and to reestablish the bonds with family and friends lost through substance abuse.

Change is not easy sometimes and we will go through it with love towards self. It is our self-doubt and often our lack of confidence in our basic goodness that hinders our progress. I have helped many find the self-compassion needed for self-healing and with that a much more mindful approach to life. I have been down the road of mental health challenges. There are many ways I used therapy technics and mindfulness practice to help develop a much more balanced self. I am confident I can help you find the richness in life that you deserve.

The human mind is a very powerful thing. I believe taking care of the mind in turn creates a healthy, well-rounded life. I love exploring in-depth the relationship between the thoughts, feelings and behaviors a person experiences. Doing so reveals insight into past trauma, negative core beliefs, addictions, and subconscious coping mechanisms. Exploration of this paves the way to understanding pathologies as well as anxiety, depression, shame, anger, fear, etc.

Sometimes becoming the best "you" requires a little outside support. Professional counseling services can be just that, in a short-term, solution-focused model. Other times, past or recent trauma can interfere with your ability to make meaning out of current circumstance, causing you to feel overwhelmed and ineffective. Trauma focused therapy can help with resolving past trauma and cutting ties with old self-concepts or self-talk that no longer serve you.

Many of us struggle on a daily basis with intrusive thoughts caused by traumatic memories, stress, shame, and/or loss of meaning and purpose. We are often left feeling anxious or depressed, angry, and disconnected from the world as we try to make sense of our experiences. If you're like most of us, you've likely learned to cope through addiction, codependency, and mental or physical illness. Yet, you're also keenly aware that your experiences have the potential to transcend pain by creating meaning. The search for meaning gives rise to understanding, and with understanding comes healing.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
