My name is Ms. Cherica Allen, but you can call me “Cher.” I am a licensed professional therapist and licensed family therapist associate in the State of Texas. I have over 15 years of experience in working with adolescents, relationship issues, family conflict, depression/anxiety disorders, traumatic experiences, and substance use disorders. The best therapeutic approach is the relationship that I have with you, there are many modalities, but I believe that you have the “tools” necessary to transform your “struggles into triumphs.” My therapeutic approach is uniquely tailored to your needs.

If you’re like me, you know what the right thing is. After all, you’re the expert on you. But that’s just the problem, isn’t it? You know the right thing, you know what’s true, and yet still you struggle with self-criticism and doubt. You know you can’t be perfect, and yet you feel shame for not being enough. And you don’t know how to reconcile what you know with what you feel. Truthfully, this is a common problem. But just because it’s common, doesn’t mean you have to go along with it.

I like to define trauma as "a natural response to an event that has overwhelmed a person's capacity to cope". An individual's capacity varies considerably, making the nature of trauma very personal and often hard to spot. Fortunately though, the underlying mechanism of the condition is fairly universal, affecting people similarly, which makes it identifiable and thus treatable. It's clear that a war veteran, a 4th grade student, and a career politician have very different hardships in their lives, but the experience of a traumatic event remains the same for all of them - their respective abilities to cope have been overwhelmed.

To say "things aren't always easy" is often an understatement. Sometimes things are more than hard, and may have been piling up for a while. Whether you're battling depression, anxiety, grief, or changes in life, I'm here to help. I've worked with children, teens and adults in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, where they work to sort out their struggles. I have seen the damage trauma can do to relationships, but have also seen the power in connecting with others.

Are you struggling with painful memories that keep you up at night? Are you wondering if life will ever be normal again? Do you feel like no one understands? You are not alone. Many adults wonder if life will ever get better, after experiencing trauma, grief or difficult relationships. Imagine if you didn’t have to feel this way. It can be a challenge, but people do experience joy again. I make it my goal to be a safe place for those who want to explore concerns, work through painful memories, increase insight and learn healthier ways of coping with life’s challenges.

Life has a funny way of throwing us curve ball after curve ball, and it can seem impossible at times to ever get a handle on things. As we do our best to navigate our complex world, we are often plagued by things like uncomfortable thoughts and emotions, questions about our purpose in life, struggling with finding our place in the world, and all the normal ups and downs that start to weigh on us. If this sounds like you, rest assured that you're in the right place, and that you should be proud for taking the first step towards managing the challenges that burden you.

Caregiver challenges and burnout does not discriminate. The demands of caregiving can be detrimental on a person. Do you want to make the most of the time you have with your loved one? It is imperative to meet them where they are mentally to be an effective caregiver. Depression can feel dark and isolated. Anxiety and stress can lead one to impulsive reactions due to uncontrolled frame of mind. Learn to manage these feelings and regulate the emotional and unwanted burdens of life. Grief is a natural and normal part of life we all will face. Feeling lost or unable to move forward with life is not a healthy place to stay.

Do you find yourself gripped with anxiety and worry, no matter what you do? Maybe you find yourself in repetitive, harmful patterns. I love exploring in-depth the relationship between the thoughts, feelings and behaviors a person experiences. Doing so reveals insight into past trauma, negative core beliefs, addictions, and subconscious coping mechanisms. Exploration of this paves the way to understanding pathologies as well as anxiety, depression, shame, anger, fear, etc.

As human beings we seek to be heard, understood, and validated. Those are intensified when you face challenges, conflicts with relationships or employment, and obstacles that facing alone seem too daunting. During trying times it is all to easy to lose hope in things getting better. We find ourselves feeling helpless but most importantly difficult times test our faith. The goal of counseling is to regain hope, rebuild your faith, and obtain the tools necessary to face life's challenges with strength and confidence.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
