Nicely done - You should be proud of this step! It takes significant strength to start looking for a counselor. I applaud starting the process... but don't give up now! We all face challenges - stages of the path of life - mental, physical, spiritual, relational; all of it. It can significantly help to find an understanding and caring professional who brings their heart, soul, training and a team model... to walk alongside of us for a part of the path. My team and I would love to come alongside.

Do you want more joy, peace, confidence, self-worth, love, or meaning in your life? There is a good chance an unprocessed traumatic event is standing in the way of your happiness. Unprocessed traumatic memories can lead to depression, anxiety, hopelessness, shame, agitation, physical symptoms, relational issues, addictions, and more. Processing trauma, especially sexual abuse, can feel overwhelming and scary. I understand. I believe there is hope and healing through Brainspotting and/or Emotional Transformation Therapy. They are quick, gentle methods that process traumatic events at a neurological level often with minimal talking.

Coming to counseling is one of the bravest things anyone can do, as it requires emotional strength, humility, and determination to make changes in areas that you may be experiencing some frustration. I consider it a great privilege to come alongside others as they navigate through difficult circumstances, and learn how to get from where they currently are, to where they want to be. I am honored to be a part of their journey of self-discovery, as well as the discovery of truth in their lives.

My hope in therapy is that I might help you find a position of personal power, where you begin to face and conquer anxieties that may have kept you from fully enjoying life. There is so much beauty in human resiliency, and it is this attribute that makes it unnecessary for us to continue to dwell in past trauma, and gives us permission to find happiness. It is my belief that you were born to find a state of true, lasting happiness, and that you are not only capable, but deserving of this, because you are human.

You're tired, frustrated and just want peace at home! What works for one of your children doesn't work for the other and that's frustrating. Wish your teen girl came with an instruction manual? Your teen seems lonely, withdrawn, struggling with social issues, or can't control their anger and you feel hopeless because you don't know what to do to help. As parents we want our children to be healthy and happy yet sometimes we can't fix the situation for them and that makes us feel a failure as a parent.

What's up! I'm Troy Thomason and I'm one of the top providers of mental health counseling for veterans in east TX, though I also work with just about every community out there. I've had success working with nearly every type of person, with mild diagnoses all the way to severe clinical diagnoses. Each person is unique, so the support I provide is specifically tailored to each individual. Some clients just need someone to talk to, while others would really benefit from learning psychological life hacks or need better coping skills. Whatever your problem is, I'll do what I can to help!

Obstacles in our lives can cause an overwhelming amount of stress and trigger emotions we never knew existed. You’ve probably experienced a loss of some sort whether it be a your past, death, job, or relationship. You don’t have to face it alone. Maybe you’re the person everyone turns to when life happens. Yet, when you’re in need it’s difficult to find a shoulder to cry on or a listening ear to vent. You’re trying to hold it all together as feelings of uncertainty consume you. Are you trying to find balance and achieve your goals as you journey through life, school, or your career? Maybe you're just wanting to be a better YOU...

You’re fucking exhausted. This isn't where you thought you would be at this age. You think you should have already figured out your relationships, your career, your family, etc. Isn’t there more to life? All you want to do is crawl into bed and pull the covers over your head. The mean voice inside keeps telling you that you aren’t good enough, that you don’t deserve to rest. “Take care of everyone else before taking care of yourself." “You have to be strong…All The Damn Time.“ You can’t say no because then they won’t like you."

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
