I am an affirming, sex positive, tattooed, feminist therapist, who specializes in working with women and the LGBTQIA+ community. Therapy is a WEIRD experience, and I love weird. I am here to meet you exactly where you are, as exactly who you are, to help navigate through all of life's bullshit without shame or judgement. You can expect me to be very casual in approach, style, and language, so seriously, come as you are. Think therapy with a little cursing, infinite acceptance, and a safe space to explore every aspect of your life.

Are you the one everyone turns to - the caregiver, the strong friend, the helper - but lately you're burned out, anxious, or just numb? Maybe you've been holding yourself together for so long that you've lost touch with what you need. Or maybe you've survived something big - religious trauma, fertility struggles, chronic health issues - and you're just now realizing how much of yourself you lost along the way.

Therapy is not one size fits all. My goal for you as the client is to create a safe and affirming space where you can be yourself. Feeling safe in the therapy room is essential to do the hard work of healing and growing from things that have happened to us in life. Therapy should be a collaboration between the client and therapist in order to help you in the best possible way. I strive to create a non-judgmental, safe, and supportive space for you.

Therapy can be a daunting task. It is my goal to help you address the issues you are seeking help for and give you real life techniques to use in your therapeutic process. I tend toward cognitive behavioral and solution focused therapies but recognize that everyone is unique and may require different approaches. I have significant experience working with emotionally/behaviorally disturbed children, abused children/adolescents and adult survivors of trauma. I tend to view therapy as a process. I believe it is important to meet people where they are so they can fully embrace the changes they seek to make.

Do you or your child experience distressing emotions that appear to you, and perhaps to others, to be excessive given the current situation? Do you tend to be highly reactive to certain triggers? Is there one or more dysfunctional belief that you believe about yourself that on an intellectual level you know is not true? Through therapy, we can get you on track to leading a happier, more fulfilling life by equipping you with the tools you need to more efficiently and confidently manage life's challenges.

Hello, my name is Chelsea Hicks, and I have been a therapist for over a decade. Finding a therapist that is a good fit for you is a huge component of therapy being effective. Clients that feel they are successful with me are focused on change and ready to work. The only one you can control is yourself. "Gray rock" is a therapy technique that allows us to have boundaries with people even if they refuse to comply. Often it seems like there are a lot of people, opinions, and behaviors impacting our lives, but the reality is we do CHOOSE how we feel and respond to them.

I think what most of us are seeking is a life that feels meaningful and worthwhile. Sometimes, the hardest part of that work is knowing who we truly are, and knowing what we need to get us there. Beneath it all, we hunger for peace and clarity. I am confident these things are possible for each of us. Sometimes we just need a trustworthy guide to help us sort it all out. I am a secular/non-religious therapist providing somatic, experiential, and cognitive modalities. I provide an affirming environment wherein you can explore, grow, and become your most authentic self. If you are ready brave person, I'd love to hear your story.

My name is Scott Brewer and I am an Oklahoma City-based Marriage and Family Therapist.  Being in a committed relationships is far from easy. Especially when mistakes have been made and hurtful words have wounded one another. Sometimes our relationships can become so filled with hurt and resentment that we give thought to giving up. Are you ready to put in the hard work of making your relationship better than it has ever been?

Here’s what to expect in a session with me: I offer a space for you to come exactly as you are, no matter your gender expression, sexuality, race, able-ness, spiritual beliefs or lack thereof. My only expectation is that you show up as yourself. Trauma-informed care looks like respecting your personal boundaries on when or if you feel ready to address traumatic events or symptoms you may be experiencing. I’m always going to give you the hype you deserve—showing up and doing therapy work is challenging! We will always honor the work you’re doing and growth you’re making, especially on the days don’t see it for yourself.

Are you feeling stuck in your relationships? Are you seeking change? What would your life look like if your magic wand was working? What is in the way of living the most effective life possible? Is it your belief system, your behavior? Is it a situation, a relationship or an unmet need? Building a strong relationship with yourself is the foundation for effective living. Self esteem is a result of knowing yourself, growing yourself and accepting your true self. It requires honesty, willingness and discomfort. The most effective way to change someone else's behavior is to change your own. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Accepting new clients. My approach to counseling is "It is much easier to move a couch into an upstairs apartment with someone on the other end of it." What I mean by this is that we experience situations that can be very challenging to deal with on our own. We often struggle with wanting to be our authentic selves, in finding our individual purpose, and in healing from our past traumas. We want to improve our self concept, our daily functioning and our relationships. Most issues become much more manageable with someone there to “help carry some of the weight.” This is what I attempt to do as a therapist.

Having a hard time trusting yourself or feeling confident? It can be extremely difficult in a world full of opinions and pressures of your family, friends, society, and don’t forget social media. It may leave you feeling like the universe is against you, like you think you’re doing everything “right” but everything feels so “wrong.” Imagine a life with freedom from the opinions and judgments of others. It can be a painful and daunting task to separate your beliefs/values from those around you, this is called healthy detachment. This is not a selfish endeavor as many may think; it is the path to self-love and inner peace.

I work to provide my clients with a space where they can unpack their past and present experiences without fear of judgement. Ideally, this unpacking helps my clients to understand themselves and their symptoms more holistically: they are not defective. Rather, they are individuals striving to live the best lives they can with the tools at their disposal.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
