I believe counseling can be used for many things... Addressing a crisis or trauma, identifying a goal & developing a path toward it, resolving current concerns and even sometimes helping to clarify why you feel differently than you used to. You are the expert on your life. My job is to help you fine tune that expertise and develop skills that contribute to you leading the life you want. I am not here to give you advice or tell you what to do, but rather to work with you as you address the challenges, questions or concerns you may be facing.

Life can be a wonderful adventure, but it can also offer some bumps along the way. Starting or continuing any type of healing journey can feel overwhelming. It's so important you can work on this journey feeling heard, not judged, and supported along the way. Through the therapeutic relationship, clients I work with have a better ability to utilize compassion for self and others. In addition, we work together to challenge the thoughts, patterns, and actions that are preventing you from moving forward.

I believe that the client should determine the goals for therapy, based on their particular concerns. Each client identifies how they would determine whether counseling was successful at the beginning of treatment. These become the therapeutic goals for our sessions. We typically meet weekly at the beginning of therapy and less frequently as therapy continues. Our sessions are 50 minutes long and we contract with most of the major insurance providers in the Lincoln, Nebraska area. We don't prescribe medications in our office and are happy to collaborate with medical providers and others (with a release of information).

At Origins, we are committed to supporting the whole person. We are dedicated to our mantra of "Health by choice, not by chance.". As a therapist, I believe that a person's emotional, physical and spiritual health are all equally important and one cannot exist without the others. Over the years, I have spent a great deal of time working with children and adults who have experienced traumatic events. These traumatic events may be difficult to understand and can impact our daily interactions at school, home, and work. When those experiences become overwhelming, working with a therapist who is specifically trained in trauma can be very helpful to the individual and family. In addition to providing services for trauma, I work closely with individuals (of all ages) who have anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism, and chronic medical conditions. Clinical services may be provided in the office, home, school or via telehealth.

Anxiety & OCD take many forms. A fear of contamination, discomfort when something is out of order, distress that you might act on a harming/sexual thought, fear that you are a bad person or will be punished by a higher being, blasphemous thoughts that shake your faith, or fears you are responsible for something bad happening. Anxiety can look like worries about the future, fear of embarrassment, health anxiety, panic attacks, hair pulling and skin picking, or wondering if you're good enough. If any of this sounds familiar, my practice may be a good fit for you, as I specialize in the treatment of anxiety disorders, OCD, and BFRBs.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
