I care about people and want to be helpful. As Helen Keller said, "The only way out is through," and you don't have to do it alone. I view therapy as a collaborative process in which we work together in a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space. Using evidence-based practices, with compassion and a little humor, we will partner to increase awareness of your thoughts and feelings, clarify your values and goals, and build skills to help keep you moving forward. Together we can work through hard things, get unstuck, and live your life how you want it to be. You can do this. You have more strength and ability than you may realize.

I work primarily with adults with a wide range of presenting problems such as depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, bipolar, etc. My early training and early career jobs were in agencies serving primarily children and adolescents. I have shifted to working primarily with adults, but continue to keep my hand in a bit of therapy with adolescents. My background in child/adolescent therapy has been useful in working with adults struggling with their children, teens, and adult children. I also enjoy working with couples struggling with the trials and complexities of being in a marriage.

All too often, we seek support and are left feeling dismissed or that there is something wrong with us, but this is not rooted in truth. I believe so much of our daily functioning and self-conceptualization is learned and stems from the experiences we have in life. As we uncover the context of your unique situation, I work to provide a safe, supportive space to validate and process the experiences you've had. I strive to facilitate healing by exploring the root issues, resulting in a greater sense of inner peace.

Hi, I’m Nate Christensen, LIMHP. I work with adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, mood swings, stress, and life transitions. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from the life they want to be living. My goal is to help you feel more balanced, confident, and in control. As adults, it’s easy to get caught up in responsibilities and expectations—leaving little time to care for yourself. Therapy can be a place to slow down, reflect, and realign with your values and goals.

Are you feeling lost, unmotivated or down in your day-to-day life? Do you feel like you don't have a place to express your feelings freely? Are you looking for someone to challenge you and cheer you on as you tackle difficult topics or new life stages? If you answered "yes" to any of these, we would be a great fit! I work to make therapy a safe and inviting space for people to speak about what is on their mind. I believe therapy should be a place where you can be your truest self! Through working together, I help clients work through their goals, not around them. Not sure what your goals are? We can work together to find them.

Are you struggling with anxiety and depression due to life transitions such as divorce, infertility, the death of a loved one, college stress or the loss of a dream, and seeking Christian counseling? Have you experienced trauma in your life and you feel stuck under the weight of worry and fear? Are “shoulds” and “musts” leaving you paralyzed with thoughts of “I’m not good enough” and “I don’t matter”? Often people wait to reach out until they feel depleted, resentful, and ashamed. I believe we get stuck due to our thinking, and the way we get unstuck is to change our thinking! But is it possible? Yes! It doesn't have to be this way.

I firmly believe that we were not made to experience life alone. Stepping into spaces where we feel safe, heard and supported facilitates an environment for growth. My strengths and personal experiences with counseling ignited a passion to support others as they move forward in their journey. I emphasize an environment in which individuals feel safe to step into self-exploration and empowered to utilize their personal wisdom as they take steps toward their best self. My biggest hope for clients is that they will realize they are worthy of unconditional positive regard and the work it takes to move toward their best self.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
