Hello! ! I am a professional counselor who absolutely loves meeting and helping people! My belief is that everyone is going through life doing their best, and if I can make this road more comfortable and add some clarity and contentment then I would have done my job. My ideal client is someone who is motivated to get and feel better, who is open to be challenged and grow! I am an Optimist and truly believe that people are essentially good but also realize life happens and sometimes things get tough, that is where I can help lessen the load and get a new perspective. I do see adults, teens and older kids 6+. Thank you!

While we all strive to live a life full of joy, excitement, success and fulfillment, we all encounter times when our plans for ourselves get derailed. Some may struggle with relationships, mental illness, trauma, tragedy or life stage transitions. We all need some help during these times to help get back on the path to wellness and happiness. I believe that while these trials are difficult, they can also be used as stepping stones to help us become a better version of ourselves. How we face our challenges gives us the opportunity for personal growth. I would love to be the one to help you with that process.

We have an innate need to be in relationship. It is the very foundation of what it is to be human. We need to experience love, reciprocity and fulfillment. A healthy relationship considers the needs of others, focuses on patience and kindness, maintains honesty and trustworthiness and is nurturing. I'm a therapist who works at helping my clients restore love and trust within their identity and among relationships by essentially helping them become their own therapist. Everyone experiences violations in relationships and it's when we're without a restoration process that we continue feeling pain.

My primary goal as a therapist is to provide a safe place for my clients to explore the factors and forces at work in their lives and exert some control over those forces. Only when we participate consciously in the changes within ourselves and the world around us, can we give direction to and exert influence on them. Everyone has a different starting point and desired outcome in therapy, so we will always begin by identifying your individual needs and goals while forming our therapeutic alliance. It is my sincere desire to help people advance past whatever may be hindering their development and peace.

I believe that strength is not defined by burying our feelings, “keeping your chin up,” or other cliche sayings that encourage silence. True strength is being vulnerable, talking about how you feel, and yes, asking for help. If you are ready to look at whatever is hurting you, whatever is interfering in your relationships, and whatever is keeping you from the life that you want to live, THAT is strength and where your true power lies.

Empowerment for Life’s Journey: Empowerment has always been a special and meaningful concept for me. Empowerment is the process of becoming stronger and more confident. This is important especially in controlling one’s life. As a mental health counselor, my specialty, is helping individuals to work to remove challenges to achieving satisfaction in their lives. Many times we find ourselves stuck in patterns that are self-defeating but seem difficult to change. These may cause us problems in school and work, as well as in our peer and family relationships, and interfere with the enjoyment of pleasurable activities.

I work with those motivated to self understanding, growth and positive change. Life often throws us out of balance creating adverse symptoms, such as grief, depression, anxiety. Perhaps, you have a history of trauma that continues to effect you in life, work, or relationships. Or there is tension in your family system, marriage, relationships, and/or career. Whatever it is that "isn't working" there is a way to move through it... sometimes we just need a little guidance and extra support. I am that guidance and support, to lead you into a state a mind-body-soul balance.

We all have a story to share that does not have to be defined by our past. You have what it takes to write the next chapter of your life. I would consider it a privilege for you to allow me to walk alongside you and support you as you begin this journey of healing. You are not alone. Together we can address and manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma. These concerns manifest differently for everyone. In my work I will draw from aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Internal Family Systems and others to make this time suit you.

My work with individuals and their families is based on a life time of personal and family experience learning to live with serious mental illness. I have spent much of my adult life involved in research through the National Institute of Mental Health, advocating for families and individuals through the National Alliance on Mental Illness and working with the most vulnerable populations through the Mental Health Center PACT program. I believe that everyone is capable of meaningful recovery through the pursuit of education, healing, and personal growth.

My name is Michelle and I am the owner of Coffee Date Counseling Services, LLC. So why the name "Coffee Date Counseling Services"? No, I don’t do couples counseling or specialize in relationship advice. My vision for Coffee Date Counseling Services is tied directly to the experience that I hope to create for clients. Counseling should be a human experience, one in which you feel supported and connected as you wrestle with the vulnerability that typically leads someone to seek out support. The image of two people meeting and sharing experiences over coffee evokes in me the feelings I hope my clients experience after our sessions.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in 59102?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
