It is a deep human desire to be seen, heard, loved and known. I am honored and humbled by my clients inviting me into their lives to witness their pain, struggles and perseverance. I am with my clients to empower and challenge them in their growth, healing and beauty. No matter the past or path that got them into the counseling room with me, my main focus is to partner with them to build a better future. Not a future to just feel better or make it to the next day or hope to have better relationship or to get over the past; but beyond. We work together as a team to flourish as a child of God, this side of Heaven.

I seek to help people find hope and light in dark times. I love working within youth, young adults, and families to help mend concerns and disconnects within important relationships because relationships are a foundation of life. In addition to relationships I love working one-on-one to help clients find new ways to heal and cope with whatever their life situations may be: mental illness, life changes, grief, loss, transitions, and any other obstacle that is ever present in life today. Each person has their own story and I am humbled to help clients navigate theirs.

I have over 30 years of experience. Most of us are faced with situations and issues at some point in our life we never dreamed would happen to us. When navigating what life throws at us it's not only helpful, but important for our long term recovery, to have the right support along the way. As a therapist with over thirty years of experience I have helped and supported many individuals, couples and families work through issues ranging from anxiety and depression to infidelity, financial stress, illness and death, separation, interpersonal and family conflict, addictions, identity and sexuality issues, as well as abuse issues.

I believe that what we are dealing with is not who we are. Challenges with substance use, mental health symptoms, relationships, or whatever else you are facing do not define you. Learning how to see beyond these things to the full and complete person you are can be both difficult and healing. I believe that my role as a therapist is to help clients start that process in a supportive and non-judgmental way. I want you to feel that you are the driving force in your therapy experience, not judgement or stigmas.

Thank you for taking the time to review my profile. I want to commend you for taking the courageous step to seek therapy. I hope you will find my office to be a supportive, trusting, safe space for you to explore the struggles and challenges you experience in life. It is very important to me that you feel heard and seen in therapy with me. We will take the time to explore and celebrate the important aspects of your identity. Life can be difficult to navigate at times but you do not have to do it alone. In our work together I wont try to fix you, tell you what to do or assume what’s best for you. However, I will remind you that you aren't broken, give you room to access your own wisdom, support you in figuring out what to do, and collaborate with you on how to make the hard stuff easier to sit with. I believe that you are the expert on your own life and that it's my job to walk along side you and empower you to work with your own self knowledge during this process of growth and healing. I provide a safe, nonjudgmental space for our work together.

John is a therapist with 25 years experience as a mental health clinician serving adults, couples, children, adolescents and families. His training from the University of Iowa and Simmons College in Boston offers a strong theoretical grounding in psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy. That is important, but more important is your experience as a client. Our work together will be built upon a helping relationship of trust and understanding. What would it look like? Identifying and solving specific problems; exploring aspects of your "self" and utilizing your strengths; making change that you set as a goal.

My ideal client is an individual who has experienced intense stress, pain, and wounding within their life and is striving to lessen these forces and strengthen the path they are on. Many of my clients have had experiences with substances or psychedelics that they used on their own to try to access their inner parts, and some have also had extremely powerful or distressing psychedelic experiences they are now working to integrate and organize. These clients are trying to balance genuine insight with the confusions of trauma and the needs of many internal parts that do not always cooperate gently.

I am happy to work with clients of all backgrounds and mental health challenges, and take a person-centered approach to tailor the therapeutic work to each individual client. I do, however, have more experience working with clients who struggle with symptoms associated with depression and anxiety. While the experiences of depression and anxiety can differ from person to person, this can often look like: a lack of energy or motivation, feelings of hopelessness, low self-esteem, sleep challenges, constant stress or worry about life stressors, irritability, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, and/or experiences of panic.

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
