I am most interested in working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community, providing safe, respectful, and culturally responsive care. I have a strong interest in the experience of minority communities, intersectionality, trauma, grief and bereavement, building healthy relationships, and teaching skills around self-advocacy and boundaries. I have immediate openings in person and via telehealth. I work with you as an individual, couple, or as a family. Together, we can: Define your best path forward; Consider and support your identity and its full expression; Improve your communication and relationship skills; Deepen or find your purpose and joy for living; Create a life that is more in alignment with your desires and your values; Foster the care and respect that you want; and manage symptoms of severe mental illness. Living intentionally, including being in therapy, isn't always easy. But it's far more satisfying than banging our heads against the same old wall.

Usually, the thing that brings us to therapy has us feeling stuck. We might feel paralyzed with indecision as parts of our internal selves compete with one another for attention. We might experience recurring conflict with people we care about. We might feel that our identity - our internal self-knowing - is somehow being prevented from fully expressing itself because of messages we receive from family or society. Most often, the reason we seek therapy is some combination of the above, and as a result of our “stuckness” we may feel sadness, despair, anxiety, anger, or an unnerving lack of feeling altogether.

Hi, I'm a clinical psychologist and have spent the last 20 years providing DBT in the Twin Cities community; first during my doctoral internship, then for 15 years at the University of Minnesota Psychiatry Department, and now in my private practice. I have been trained in multiple variations of DBT by recognized experts in DBT. I specialize in working with individuals who have a history of trauma and offer prolonged exposure as a treatment for PTSD. My training and experience have prepared me for helping individuals with a history of or actively struggling with suicidal thoughts and ideation.

With more than a decade of experience in hospitals, clinics, and private practice, I am guided by the belief that there is more that’s right with people, than is wrong with people. There is much about the way we live that contributes to the feeling of disconnection and destabilization that so many of us feel. And yet, few of us were ever taught the skills to navigate the seemingly simple (but actually pretty complex) worlds that we live in.

Navigating the challenges of early adulthood and adolescence can feel overwhelming, but gaining independence and a sense of self does not mean you need to figure it out alone. Therapy provides space to understand and process your thoughts, emotions, and experiences, and build the insight and skills needed to feel empowered and confident during this critical transition. I combine evidence-based approaches, including CBT and ACT, with 22 years experience connecting and building trust with young people to help with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, identity development, healthy relationships, and strong coping and communication skills.

I enjoy working with college students and young adults seeking to learn more about themselves, including the patterns that may have stopped working for them. I believe each person is doing the best they can with what they have, and enjoy working with individuals who strive to learn how to best use their strengths effectively to reach their goals. Few things feel more honorable than sitting with those who are open to challenge themselves, while honoring their needs, wants and goals. I enjoy working with those with the desire to continue growing through every chapter of life.

Life can bring challenges. In our work together I will help you uncover your strengths and capacity to heal.

How can I find a therapist in 55104?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
