Therapy provides us the opportunity for greater self-discovery and deepened self-understanding. The person I enjoy working with is someone who is genuinely curious about what makes them tick, why they make choices that sink their dreams or sabotage the relationships important to them; but who are also wanting to know their strengths and talents so they can embrace and use them more effectively.

Life's motion can feel intense and demanding, seeming to move at a pace beyond one's stride, resulting in chronic stress, increased anxiety, fear, and chronic pain. Throughout this motion, maintaining self-care and nurturing relationships can feel overwhelming. Connecting with another human can be one of the safest ways to become grounded and encounter what is asking for acknowledgment and care. I believe the therapeutic relationship and environment has immense potential to provide a secure container for what is felt to be honored and explored, allowing any fear that arrives to be transformed into intentional forward movement.

Dr. McGravey recently hired an intern, so the waitlist is only about 2-3 months for testing (ages 6+ with Tim or 4+ with Dr. McGravey). We have immediate openings for therapy (ages 11+)! We are in network with several health insurance plans (including United Healthcare, Aetna, and Cigna) and provide out of network benefits to others. Please reach out with questions! Testing requires only one in person appointment - everything else is done virtually.

The process of therapy requires the unmasking of socially condoned violence done to individuals. In therapy, the uncovering process requires digging through layers of neglect and indifference, contempt and ridicule, shame and humiliation, criticism and guilt, exploitation and manipulation. Almost without exception, each breakthrough involves breakage and releases costly feelings of outrage, hatred, and pain. The reparative process calls for understanding, acceptance, and support, along with a ritualistic observance of the symbolic meanings of the events which come to light.

Everyone has a time when they need support and struggle with asking for help. I know this from my own experience and interactions with others. When someone comes to me, I want to be sure that they know that I understand first the difficulty in deciding to ask for help and second that they feel safe enough to trust me with their story, thoughts, and emotions.

Are you struggling with prioritizing yourself without feeling guilty? Do you put yourself last on you feel like you are constantly prioritizing the needs of others over your own? You don’t recognize the women you see in the mirror and you wonder how this has happened. Have you lost sight of your goals, desires and personality? Your mood frequently fluctuates and you just can’t seem to keep it stable? You’ve read self help books, watched Tiktoks and talked to your friends yet you haven’t been able to shake the feelings you have. Relationships with peers, family and partners are overwhelming and at times you just want to run away.

Life is a struggle sometimes and even then, it can feel like it is a struggle all the time. This can lead to emotional and physical fatigue/pain resulting in a lack of motivation to have relationships with anyone and even ourselves. When we feel like the world is against us is when it is most important to reach out to someone and that is where a therapeutic relationship comes into play. The therapeutic relationship is one that you can trust, feel no judgment, find guidance, and learn to trust yourself again.

Many people suffer and they are not quite sure what the problem is. Many other people may have been told what the problem is but this still has not helped. These are the people I work best with. No matter what the problem seems to be, I seem to be able to help when others have not. When my clients have told me this, I know I am on the right track.

Normal is a setting on a dryer. We are all unique and valid individuals with vast minds. We all have different situations and I believe in using those pieces to heal and build strength. While I specialize in trauma, addiction, and mood, our struggles are usually not that one note or simple. I focus on all aspects of who you and where you want to be, building a strong relationship based on empathy, trust and non judgement. Life is rough, we lose sight of our way, stop seeing the beauty, forget who we are, feel stuck or changed. It takes courage to be vulnerable and reality is we are imperfectly perfect.

Life is hard, but it doesn't have to be burdensome. Together, we can work through what is holding you back and help you begin to experience the life you deserve and have envisioned for yourself. As a counselor, I have learned that the counseling process is one that should be tailored to each individual's needs, not "one size fits all". I enjoy working with a variety of clients from ages 16 and up and from all different walks of life.

Do you feel like you've done everything you were “supposed” to do, only to find yourself feeling unfulfilled, anxious, or empty? Does it look like you have it all together from the outside, but it feels like you're falling apart on the inside? Maybe you're always looking toward the next goal to help you feel at peace, but it never quite does. You've worked hard to get to where you are, only to feel confused because your success hasn't made you feel content. You're struggling with your relationships, anxiety, and overall you're feeling dissatisfied with your life. This can be frustrating but things can get better.

I help healthcare professionals and their spouses fall in love again one conversation at a time. Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare & medical professionals have some of the most stressful and time consuming jobs on the planet. Often there's little left for romance at the end of the day. As the husband of a night shift nurse, I can tell you even the strongest relationships need regular maintenance. Whether you're drifting apart, feel like roommates, or get stuck in the same fights over and over, I can help you improve communication, deepen intimacy, and resolve conflict. Text or email me to set up a free consultation call.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in 53222?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
