Vulnerability sucks. So does pretending you’ve got it all together. Let’s ditch both and get real. I offer a holistic, evidence-based approach to therapy that supports your whole self—mind, body, and nervous system. Clients often describe my style as direct, supportive, and deeply empathetic. I believe in getting to the heart of what’s going on while creating a space where you feel seen, respected, and empowered. My approach helps you identify what’s within your control, shift patterns that no longer serve you, and reconnect with your own inner resilience. Ready to explore a path toward greater clarity, relief, and balance?

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, my goal is to create a safe, compassionate space where individuals, couples, and families feel heard, respected, and supported. I believe that healing begins when we are truly seen without judgment and without pressure to be anyone other than who we are in this moment.

I want to be able to help empower individuals to be able to take control of their own lives and learn about themselves as they look towards their futures. I work primarily with those having trouble navigating tough circumstances in life (life transitions, divorce, empty nest) as well as anxiety and stress management. If you have goals that you feel like you are having a hard time reaching for whatever reason, I would love to be able to help you break down that barrier and get you to where you want to be!

Immediate openings available! Sometimes life just feels heavy. Whether it's the constant pressure of stress, the weight of depression, persistent anxiety, or just feeling "stuck," it’s easy to feel alone in the struggle. I work with adults who are looking for a non-judgmental, relaxed space to sort things out. Therapy with me isn't cold or clinical; my style is laid-back and my personality is warm, because I believe the foundation of healing is feeling truly seen, heard, and accepted as you are.

Learning to live in our own skin—in the world, no matter what we’ve been through—is a lifelong journey. You’re an adult. You may or may not be a veteran. You’re facing life changes. You feel stuck. Maybe you’re relying on coping skills that give you short-term relief, but leave you feeling worse in the long run. Or you’ve been plagued by depression, anxiety, or a sense of being overwhelmed. You're looking for meaningfulness, purposefulness, and/or confidence. You’re not alone. We all want the same things: connection, clarity, a life worth living. Who you’ve been is not nearly as exciting as who you can become!

Starting therapy can feel scary in the beginning, and I am here to help make this experience be the least non-intimidating and positive as possible. It takes a lot of strength to ask for help, and I want to be here for you as you take these major steps forward in your life. I focus on client strengths and meeting clients where they are at. I will challenge thought patterns in a gentle and nurturing way. I am here to offer support and encouragement. I am not here to judge or tell anyone how to live their life, as each person knows themself best.

Hi! I'm Amy Parker Reid. I am a master's level social worker in central Iowa with over 16 years of experience working with children, teens, and young adults. While on my journey I have gained a deep understanding of Iowa's mental health system, available resources in the DSM area, and special education services. As a former special education teacher and counselor, I have seen first-hand how difficult adjusting to new circumstances, routines, and relationships can bring about intense emotions and challenging behaviors. These stressors can often lead to a pattern of negative interactions and power struggles leaving parents frustrated.

Feeling disconnected, misunderstood, or like you are on the outside looking in? Do you feel unseen or unheard and want a therapist that strives to really see and hear you? I approach all clients as an interaction between two people, not just you talking. I often offer feedback, insights, and sometimes direction. I love to laugh and swear with my clients, and I sometimes even cry with them. Most importantly, I see you as a unique and resilient individual with a story to tell and a healing journey ahead. It would be my honor to share this journey with you.

With a background as a long-time middle school special education teacher, mental health therapist in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and as a foster/adoptive parent, I bring both clinical expertise and lived experience to my work with families. I specialize in supporting youth and caregivers facing challenges such as developmental trauma, ADHD, ODD, autism (including PDA), anxiety, depression, and attachment-struggles (including RAD). Caregivers often feel judged because of the way their kid behaves, and I'll never do that. I empathize with caregivers & work to help kids & parents understand each other & communicate better.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
