I began my journey into the helping profession by directly reaching out to individuals experiencing chronic homelessness in the streets, camps, and surrounding areas of Grand Traverse County as a member of a local Street Outreach team. I continued by earning both bachelor and master degrees in clinical social work from Ferris State University, while gathering diverse experience in a range of settings and roles in the Kent County area; including community living supports, family case management, inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, crisis residential, home-based family therapy, outpatient individual therapy, and private practice.

If you are experiencing feelings of anxiety, depression or have difficulty managing your relationships, I can work with you to identify healthier ways in which to relate to yourself and others. Life events, including trauma, can have a lasting effect and limit our interactions. Learning to get to the root of behaviors is an important part of our over all development. Together we can identify ways to make healthy changes that are potentially more meaningful and sustainable. I often encourage a holistic approach (mind, body, spirit) to treatment which can be helpful for overall clarity and peace of mind.

Being heard and validated are two of the most powerful avenues to feeling a sense of belonging and worth. Unfortunately, we run into situations in life that shut us down, tell us our life experience doesn't count, and we leave those situations feeling empty and uncertain about what we've done wrong. Through therapy, we learn to find ourselves through our values and we learn new skills to navigate the hills and valleys of life so that when those situations come up, we can come out of them stronger and more sure of ourselves. I look forward to walking that path alongside you while you discover how you can have a full life and thrive.

Do you feel you keep getting in your own way to being happier? Do you feel like you put on a "mask" of sorts to face the world? Does keeping that mask on leave you exhausted at the end of a given week? In my life & in my practice as a therapist, I have found that emotional distress is often caused by external factors that make us believe we must shrink or contort ourselves to meet perceived needs of our social environment. I would feel honored to sit with you & help find ways to move within your life toward what you truly want & need. Being more authentically ourselves encourages others to do the same; I hope I can do that for you.

Comments from Robert about his approach to therapy: We all have times in our lives that can shake us at our foundation. Coming into therapy, whether if it’s for the first time, or this has been a theme in your life takes courage. I think to be helpful the first thing is to feel understood, feel heard, acknowledged, and validated. Next, it is to discover whatever it is that you’re facing means for you as an individual, then gaining skills with which to cope adaptively. I believe acceptance is the key to facing difficulties in life. Acceptance does not mean approval, it means we learn to live life as it is, not how we want it.
