Our lives are full of changes, struggles, and great joys. It is during the times when we are experiencing a variety of family or personal struggles that we need someone to listen to us and offer resources and alternative points of view while we challenge ourselves to grow. Whether you, your teenager or your family are experiencing obstacles, I would like to help. I have spent nearly 20 years working with adolescents, particularly girls, and their families. I also enjoy working with athletes and sports-minded individuals.

You worry all the time about things you don't even need to worry about. You get stressed out so easily. Everyday life makes you feel overwhelmed. You want to change your life, but you don't even know where or how to start. Change can be scary and difficult. The thing is, if you don't change what you do or how you do it, you'll never get a different outcome. You need someone to help you get the ball rolling and figure out what changes to make. Yes, life is full of hard things, but you don’t have to let them control you.

I've been in practice 25 yrs - with individuals/couples & families -- kids 6+, many teens, college students & adults. I'm shamelessly informal -- no ties or pressed shirts here!. The office is quite unique - - very large, ultra comfy, w/MANY natural oddities... slightly chaotic -- like life! Good strong coffee/tea/soda & munchies always available. Pets welcome. I'm adopted myself, a licensed foster parent, & work with trauma and attachment. I have a multi-cultural family & lived abroad (Africa). I do co-parenting therapy & am also very familiar w/court systems, working with Dr.'s, lawyers, schools and custody issues.

Life brings many changing seasons that present new challenges and struggles. Throughout the seasons of life, you can find meaning and hope. People who decide to reach out and seek to find meaning and hope are courageous. It can be difficult to be honest and look at your life's path; however, I am continually amazed at each client's strength and desire for freedom in their life. I thoroughly enjoy providing additional support that can meet each client's needs.

People enter into a counseling relationship when nothing else seems to be working. Although most people soon make comments such as, “(Counseling) was a lot better than I thought it would be”, few people seek counseling as a first option. More often we seek out techniques that either help us to temporarily avoid (e.g., media, social networking) our anxiety, or we seek temporary shots of pleasure (e.g., alcohol, food, pornography) that make us feel good for a short time. Soon enough we realize that all of these things leave us feeling more hollow and lonely, and that is when we start thinking about counseling.

Your story matters. Life is full of twists and turns that can create baggage (Trauma, Family conflict, Stress & Anxiety, Depression, Unexpected life circumstances & Changes, Life Transition & Growing pains) amongst the beauty of your life. We all have flaws. But we need to accept that we are worth loving and worthy of hope and healing. This starts with unpacking your story, and finding your truth in the process. It is my honor to walk along side you, assisting in this process of healing and gaining strength within your story and life. FYI- I am walking distance from Hope College!

By the time I was 24, I had been diagnosed with OCD, PTSD, depression, anxiety disorder & panic disorder. I intimately know the affliction of mental health struggles. After years of lived personal experience with trauma & a myriad of diagnoses; a two decades long healing journey involving seeing over 50 different practitioners and tens of thousands of dollars; countless hours of training; and 2 master's degrees, I have honed an approach to therapy that weaves ancient wisdom, contemporary neuroscience, and compassionate inquiry into a tapestry of healing. And unlike most therapists, I only treat what I have personally experienced.

Life is rough at times. We can't always do it on our own. Sometimes we need professional guidance and support. I provide therapy services to adults and adolescents who are struggling with relationships, depression, or anxiety. My style is eclectic--I blend various schools of thought from my training and 25+ years of experience. I'm also interactive--I don't just reflect back what you've already said. Instead, I listen, use empathy, and focus my responses to help you get "unstuck" and accomplish the goals you want.

Rich and meaning-filled living is our birthright. Relationships, current life situation, inner struggle, the way we are wired or past experience can interfere with our natural capacity to thrive. With 30 years of experience as a therapist, I believe our conflicts and struggles are the doors through which our growth comes. I devote my practice and continued learning most powerful ways to support the fullest flourishing possible for each of us, no matter our circumstance. With this in mind, I work with individuals, couples, families, and groups. I also use on-going evaluation to insure our work together is effective and satisfying.
