The ideal client is anywhere from emerging adulthood (16+) and older. I welcome clients with a variety of issues they’d like support working through, such as life transitions, relationships, trauma, self-doubt, and more. You might be great at hiding your struggles from others while internally feeling overwhelmed or burnt out and need a supportive space to feel heard and understood. Being open to experiencing and creating change with a desire for growth is beneficial!

You are the expert on you. Let's take what you know & mix it up with my knowledge & experience (which includes 23+ yrs after the masters, plus life itself & working overseas, working with people of different races, orientations, religions, abilities, etc. Veterans & active military? Also check!). My passion is helping people live a less painful existence. Reduce suffering. Make your life path easier. I know what pain feels like, & if I can reduce yours then that's what I want to do! Give me a shot. If after the first two sessions, you don't think I can help you, then you don't pay for that 2nd session. That's fair, right?

My approach is grounded in mindfulness and self-compassion, drawing from CBT, DBT, and emotion-focused, relational techniques to meet your unique needs.

My approach to counseling is unique to you, the client. Every person's needs, stories, and personality are different and those factors should be taken into account when building a relationship with a counselor and establishing a treatment plan. You are the expert in your own life and have invited me to sit with you and help hold certain parts. While the work comes from you, it is my pleasure to create a space where you can be yourself and begin to heal. I understand that the healing process can be complicated, so I also encourage collaboration with other providers who serve you.

I have 25+ years of experience working with individuals, families and couples from age 12 on up though the lifespan. I partner with them to guide them on their journey to overcome significant difficulties, trauma and abuse from the past, including sexual, physical, emotional, psychological abuse and neglect. I firmly believe that identity (who you are) and behavior (what you do) are two distinct things: behavior does not determine identity. I help my clients to examine core beliefs that are contributing to their current struggles, to help them to decide which ones are true and helpful or not, to bring about true and lasting change.

Hi! My name is Nicole Foley. I am a licensed Master level social worker. I have over 25 years of experience working with individuals with behavioral modification needs. When working with clients, I utilize the cognitive- behavioral approach. We work on undesired behaviors through the use of behavior modification techniques with both positive and negative reinforcements. I like to emphasize the theory of changing one’s thoughts impacts feelings and behaviors. Working with me is like talking with a good friend over coffee. I am attentive and caring. My younger clients often say I’m like the cool Auntie.

Many adults feel grief, sadness, guilt, anger and worry. Major events such as diagnosis of chronic illness, divorce, trauma, grief, can contribute to loss of energy and diminished hope for positive change. Even without such dramatic occurrences, depression and anxiety often co-exist. Therapy is a form of self-care, and an opportunity to raise self-awareness that can lead to change. It can provide active listening and non-judgmental regard. Insight into core values can bring clarity, energy and movement toward goals. Mood can improve, decisions can be made with greater confidence, and a feeling of hope can be restored.

A new or expecting mother can navigate the emotional challenges that often accompany pregnancy, birth, and postpartum life. You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, overwhelm, or identity changes as you adjust to motherhood. You can possibly be juggling many roles — caregiver, partner, professional — and often feels pressure to “do it all” while quietly struggling inside. What you truly need is a safe, judgment-free space to process her emotions, find validation, and learn tools to manage stress and reconnect with yourself, being more than a mother.

When you finds yourself in the same painful circumstances over and over again in spite of wanting to get past that struggle, it is time to work with someone who can walk the path with you to a better future. A well trained and experienced therapist could be the medium to make that possible.

You have choices, and sometimes all the choices suck. They just do. I help you find your way through the choices. I believe you matter, and your feelings matter. You don't matter more than anyone else, but you certainly don't matter less! I work hard to understand what you're experiencing. I have a direct style of communicating, so you will know what I believe. While counseling isn't inherently fast, I won't waste your time.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
