The people that find the best success in working with me are: looking for insight into their behaviors & choices in life, who want to get to the root of the “why” & make changes from there; have lost someone or experienced a life transition & want an empathic, realistic, relational way of working with grief; want to unpack childhood trauma & unhealed wounds to prevent their pain from emotionally hurting others in relationship; navigate the world as a Highly Sensitive Person or with neurodivergence; are interested in the process of long term, insight focused therapy for the betterment of their relationships to self & others.

Although I specialize in problems associated with aging, I am able to help adults of all ages and walks of life! I utilize a Strengths-Based approach, which focuses on what a person is doing right, rather than focusing on "fixing" a person. The general goals for the client are that they can identify the issues, develop a plan of action, and then implement that plan. This is a very personal process. It is educational and developmental by nature. Cures are not immediate, pain-free, or instant by nature, but may require diligent effort and candid exploration. This exploration often involves experiencing ‘unpleasant’ feelings as part of the counseling process within and outside of scheduled sessions. These feelings may include but are not limited to: Anger, guilt, sadness, anxiety, or confusion.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I am here to support, listen and create a safe, warm and non-judgmental environment. In life, we experience difficult times when we need someone to be an ear and listen, and there are times when our family and friends don't fully understand our situation and affliction. My passion is to empower adolescents and adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, and autism. By collaborating with individuals, couples, groups, and families, clients can achieve their most significant potential while maintaining a healthy, happy lifestyle.

Humans experience emotion. We experience conflict. We experience pain and trauma. Though normal and common, all of these can disrupt or make it extremely difficult for an individual to meet their goals, have healthy relationships with ourself and others, or even make it through the day. These challenges can be isolating and can make anyone start to feel hopeless and hesitant to reach out for help. I encourage you to reach out anyway. Healing takes time, work, and honesty and it is worth it.

Every interaction in our lives is part of constructing our story. They may be built through family, relationships, work, marginalization, media, or society. Sometimes, these stories burden us - they tell us we are worthless, hopeless, or stuck. Perhaps they cause us depression, anxiety, other mental health issues, or sexual dysfunction. My therapeutic process is focused on learning your story holistically so we can integrate your unique strengths and challenges into treatment. I have particular training in sex therapy and LGBTQ+ clients.

I have experience working with clients with trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, self-esteem difficulties, body image difficulties, and more.

Hi, I am Douglas. My counseling approach is postmodern: you are a unique recipe of strengths, values, skills, experiences, and personality. This recipe is often tweaked throughout the day based on who or what you encounter. Sometimes that change is voluntary and sometimes it is not. Counseling can help you better understand your recipe, uncover its history, claim it as your own, differentiate yours from others, and learn how to adapt it successfully. In counseling sessions I use curiosity, humor, compassion, and accountability to explore themes of emotions, relationships, boundaries, life changes, and identity.

For many of us, anxiety, depression, and life stressors can be thought of like a wave that we ride throughout our lives. Sometimes the surf is good, and we can do so easily. Other times it might be choppy, and we have to use our resources and know-how to stay afloat. In bad times, it can feel like the waves are pulling you under. As a therapist, I strive to help clients navigate uncertain tides by processing these experiences together, drawing on their strengths, and improving coping skills.

We are evolving people living at the intersections of multiple identities. To discover our own power within our identities, we have an opportunity to learn more about who we are and how we relate. Whether it’s exploring your grief within a loss or learning new skills in improving your intimate relationships, I strive to provide equitable care, which includes considering how structural racism and racial identity impacts the wellness of individuals. I would love to learn more about your story.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
