Brene Brown wrote that "Loving ourselves through the process of owning our story is the bravest thing we'll ever do". I aim to create a safe place and a trusting relationship that will help you bravely share your story. Once we find the courage to share our truths, the courage to heal and change can come shortly after. Nothing that we experience is wasted story.

There is no substitute for compassion in the counseling relationship. I believe in a whole-person approach. This means that everything is relevant: family of origin, unwanted life events, current relationships, physical health and well being, and everyday coping challenges. I assist my clients with life transitions, grief, early childhood trauma, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, chronic pain, relationship challenges, and spiritual issues. I endorse and have expertise in mindfulness-based practices and 12+ years of Hospice experience. Strengths: trusting relationships with my clients.

My dad always says that "a major lesson in life is to realize that everything changes except change itself." Life is loaded with change and stressors and many of us struggle to survive without constant worrying. Living with a disability or chronic illness can feel even more overwhelming and impossible to manage. I hope to help my clients discover (or re-discover) their strengths and abilities while also learning how to adapt and cope with everyday life.

We often come to a crossroads in our lives, a time when staying where we are is no longer sustainable, yet we are not clear on how to do something different, or how to start down a new path. Many of us learned early on to only show aspects of ourselves that were “acceptable;” we learned which traits earned us love and cultivated those, but relinquished many others. Healing is a journey back to ourselves, a journey back our essence and back to who we were before we learned we were not enough.

Young people present unique challenges, but also unique opportunities. After almost 30 years experience working with this population, there aren't many situations I haven't encountered. There is always reason for hope. What your therapist expects influences the outcomes. As a behavioral optimist, I approach clients I work with believing that no one wants to be miserable. We all want to reach our potential, as children, adolescents, parents, families, members of a community. Every living, breathing person, whatever their age, race, gender, sexual orientation, or place in life, is capable of change. That is a firm belief of mine.

There are so many people who believe they are defective or fear rejection if they talk about their struggles. One of the first things I ask people about is what they need to feel safe. Vulnerability is not a skill we've all been taught, but a huge ingredient in the healing process! I aim to work at a gentle/appropriate pace and tailor therapy to YOU. On top of that, I will regularly check-in on how you perceive your progress/time in therapy. If you are someone who is curious and eager (or simply just fed up with where you're at!), feel free to reach out. All are welcome in my space no matter their stories.

At times, it can be hard to find providers with experience in the areas where you’ve been struggling. Folks with eating disorders or disordered eating, perinatal and postpartum challenges, and trauma and PTSD can feel very alone and misunderstood as they try to find a community who has experience treating these issues. While I have experience in all of those areas, I also enjoy treating clients dealing with general self-esteem and self-worth issues, anxiety, depression and relationship issues. I believe in helping clients heal by rebuilding trust within themselves and with others as part of the therapeutic process.

We all live inside an unfinished story. Are you lacking clarity about what you want to do with your life? Did you have a difficult or confusing childhood, and now struggle with connection to others? Did you experience a traumatic event, or relationship that has been difficult to overcome on your own? Do you struggle in relationships and wonder why you have the same problems time and time again? Have you left a high control group and need help moving forward? Do you have a chronic illness and experience the emotional pain and disappointment it can bring? If any of this resonates with you, I can help you write the rest of your story.

What attracted me to be a therapist was the involvement I experienced in high school with my school counselor. She would spend time talking to me and my friends about issues we dealt with trying to get along with each other, issues at home and she gave us a platform to talk about things and made us feel like our thoughts and feelings mattered. My personal experiences give me drive to know if I overcame certain obstacles that I can help empower others.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
