I believe that in order to be healthy and happy, the individual must be focused on growth and change. If you are not healthy or happy, then change is needed. However, several factors complicate this simple truth. We give too much or allow our power to be stolen rather than exchanged; Fear, anger, and sadness can override logic and wisdom. How we act and think affects our experience of reality. I work with clients to help increase their sense of self-direction, align their behaviors with their goals, and replace the negative thoughts and behaviors with a more positive perspective.

My ideal client feels stuck in patterns that no longer serve them and is open—however cautiously—to change. They may face substance use, anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship issues, often in combination. They seek clarity, self-understanding, and healthier ways to cope and grow. They want freedom from shame, self-doubt, and emotional pain, and hope to build a more intentional, connected life. They need both practical tools and a safe, compassionate space. They’re ready to do the work—with honesty, effort, and the right support.

Hello! Let's be real, so many people live their lives day-to-day, bottling up those hard-to-deal-with emotions or struggling to find stability with regulating themselves in a healthy, productive manner. I believe that through therapy, one can receive the emotional/mental support to achieve the goal of living a true, authentic life. The goal here is not perfection, but to at least begin moving towards a life you actually enjoy. It's time to be who you are truly meant to be.

An ideal client is someone looking to grow personally, relationally, and/or professionally, with the Christian framework of hope, love, and accountability. I offer counsel and space to consider the big picture of your life. It is important to note - I do NOT offer psychological diagnoses. That is not a disclaimer but a conviction. I highly encourage time with a licensed therapist for mental health conditions, and the traumas that may have exposed them. I want you whole. However, if it's a matter of the impact on your heart and soul, or for wisdom and spiritual perspective - I would love to walk with you.

Being a human is hard. Things happen that leave us feeling lost and uncertain of what to do with it all. On top of that, we hold a lot of what happens to us in the body, creating a struggle between what we feel and what we know, and wreaking havoc on our ability to function in the here and now. I am passionate about exploring this struggle through the creative arts, somatic work, and talk therapy. Words aren’t always enough, and using a blend of these three approaches opens up a deeper well from within our spirits. From that well, new life springs forth and we connect with our most authentic self.

I am a sliding scale therapist whose practice is focused on decreasing stress to help my clients develop a clearer idea of who they are, what they feel, and what they need. Clients who seek my care are often looking for ways to feel more confident and less fearful of the future so they can live in the moment, instead of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Feeling the need to achieve at all costs, focusing only on “what’s next”, and feeling a constant need to stay busy are all experiences I help adults learn to recognize, reframe, and conquer. I see clients on a sliding scale to keep therapy accessible and affordable. -

In this life there is always something that makes us change. Human nature says that it is love or the loss of something or someone. If you think you need help to achieve your goals or make the necessary changes to be successful, you have to give yourself a chance. During therapy you have the necessary space to talk about the different barriers that are a challenge for you. I work with different people who are going through different personal situations, having challenges with their families, or struggling in their marriage.

I see therapy as a space to learn & grow - developing skills & tools to increase coping skills & improving to become the best version of yourself. As your therapist, I am here to provide support. The aim is for you to achieve your goals by learning what you can DO to BE better. I believe that you get out of therapy what you put in. You must show up & put the work in for yourself. No matter your past experiences, you can face them & work to change your trajectory. The first step in moving forward is the action of taking the first step. When we focus on what we can do, the change process begins.

Are you struggling to communicate with your co-parent? I have been helping divorced & never-married parents with "co-parenting" since 2003. The goal is for kids to have a healthy life between mom's house and dad's house. This is a complex journey and one that I have also walked. I wrote a book, "Co-parenting Works! Helping Your Children Thrive After Divorce" (HarperCollins 2011) and created "One Heart, Two Homes" video resource to help families all around the country. I believe the power of even one stable parent can make a difference for the child! Please check out our new podcast for ideas! (Supervised LMFT Taryn Peterson 1149)

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
