You may be worried about your child. Over time, you've noticed a shift in his or her mood. Your once happy, well-adjusted child now appears increasingly angry, irritable, anxious and defensive. Despite your best efforts to connect, conversations often escalate into arguments. You're exhausted from worry and overthinking. I truly understand the struggles and know that your ultimate goal is to support your child unconditionally, to reconnect and support a close bond built on trust and open communication. And, most of all, you are ready to feel that your child is happy and thriving once again.

Life can be overwhelming, to the point where you can't seem to find out where you need to be. Maybe you know where you want to be but you're stuck. Have you been waiting for "things to get better eventually" and everything to fall into place? Life is confusing with the many paths to take, where you’re left wondering which path is the right one. Maybe you're just overwhelmed with the things on your plate and you need help through the trials you're facing. Are you ready to start feeling accomplished and motivated? Are you ready to build a life that matters? Are you ready to create balance in your life? Are you ready to begin anew?

Life can be unpredictable, challenging, and overwhelming. Stressful experiences, both positive and negative, can manifest physiologically changing the way you feel about yourself. Maybe you struggle with anxiety and you aren’t sure where it comes from. Maybe you’ve had a significant loss, either in your past or more recently, and you want to move forward. Maybe you keep reliving your past experiences through distressing memories, or maybe you’re experiencing physical symptoms that can’t be explained medically. Stress and Anxiety are common, but does that mean that you have to suffer for the rest of your life? Why struggle alone?

I work with individuals who struggle on the inside with constant worry, people pleasing, and covering up their hurt. You may be tired of not feeling like yourself. It’s hard to even know who that person is at times because you’re spread so thin. In the midst of it all, you’ve learned to keep things together, smile through the stress, and say “I’m fine” even when you're not. But under the surface, you may be wrestling with self-doubt, shame, or a deep sense of loneliness—wondering if your struggles somehow disqualify you from the wholeness you long for.

I work intensively with my patients, meeting with each patient several days a week. With this frequency of sessions, and with a particular kind of listening that psychoanalysts are trained for, I can hear thoughts and feelings beyond the surface of the patient’s spoken comments, and this helps me help my patients identify unconscious forces from their past that are causing them to suffer. I am aware that psychological struggles take time to develop, and therefore it requires time and work to achieve desired changes. I offer a safe and confidential setting, where this work can take place, in privacy, and with respect.

The quality of your relationships has a huge impact on your health and how you see yourself. You and your partner are locked in a cycle of conflict; experiencing and re experiencing the same painful pattern of distress. A new sense of felt security is possible. The power of your emotional bond can harnessed to create comfort and resilience to your relationship. Change takes courage, so thank yourself for reaching out and for taking this first step.

Human beings simply aren't meant to journey through this life alone. Sometimes we need people to walk beside us through hard moments in our lives. In a world that pushes harder and harder, it can be exceedingly difficult to take the time to care for ourselves. If you are thinking about therapy then, perhaps, you've decided that it is time to start the journey into self-care. What a great first step!

Parenting a teen can feel like living with a stranger- mood swings, slammed doors, or sudden hatred of school that you can't make sense of. Or maybe you're a 20-something, feeling anxious, depressed, stuck, or overwhelmed by the pressures of school, work, or relationships. Trauma, stress, friend drama, self-doubt, and the expectation to "have it all together" can feel crushing. The teen and young adult years can be fun & exciting, but too often come with feeling overwhelmed, insecure, and stuck. You don't have to figure this out alone. With support, healing and growth are possible.

Too often we are expected to travel through life's journey without acknowledging the incredible demands of self-exploration, healing, and discovery. Our world has taught us to believe that if we cannot see hurt, aches, pain, or trauma, then it must not be there. I invite you to challenge this belief and acknowledge that mental health is health, too. Traumas are more often than not invisible, only to be seen when someone is struggling on the outside. It is imperative to pay attention to the obstacles we cannot see.

As a therapist in long-term recovery myself, I bring both personal understanding and professional experience to helping others heal from addiction and trauma. Many of the people I work with feel stuck in patterns they can’t seem to break—often involving addiction, trauma, anxiety, or other mental health challenges. You may know you want change but feel unsure where to start, or find that past experiences continue to affect your relationships, choices, and sense of self. Untreated addiction and unresolved trauma can feel very overwhelming. Healing begins with understanding what you’re recovering from and creating a path forward.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
