Real Life Counseling is all about what the rules are for being a human being. These rules are the guidelines for playing the game we call life. Learning and discussing these univeral truths in therapy will provide you. I feel as a professional mental health counselor they form the foundation of how we can live a fulfilling and meaningful life. I also realize they are not magic, nor do they promise ten easy steps or a quick fix for emotional ailments. I offer this service in hope that my clients will learn, grow, and become aware of their potential for happiness.

Hey, There! Is life stressing you out? Are you feeling lost, stuck, anxious, or depressed? Are you struggling to be authentic, motivated, and happy? Wanting a non-judgemental space to vent and process? I got you, fam. The pain of our past tries to convince us we're meant to struggle alone. Thats Bullsh.t! It’s courageous to choose to change. You’re brave for including a support system in this vulnerable moment of self-exploration.

What is YOUR “Best Me?” Let me help you explore what that could look like and how to get there. Through counseling, I can help you find ways to heal, to grow, and to live more fully. As one who lost a child through murder, I have had to learn how to survive the very worst in life, to live purposefully with that pain, and to find my own new Best Me. For me, that is helping others like you. As a Pastor, Police Chaplain, Hospice Chaplain, and Denominational Leader, I have helped people work through many of life’s challenges and find hope and direction for a new beginning.

I have extensive experience with mood disorders, trauma and addictions and work with all ages. I am trained in EMDR and use that technique with both children and adults if appropriate. My clients often state when they first spoke to me they felt immediately at ease and did not feel judged. I am able to assist my clients in seeing patterns in their life story and work to identify and change core beliefs such as "I'm not good enough", "I'm defective" or "I cannot trust others."

I know the importance of finding someone who lets you take your time, respects your emotional development and upholds your dignity. I want to help you make sense of the life that you have and turn it into the one you want. Growth looks different for all of us. What blocks us from it might not block everybody else, too. We are all doing the best we can and deserve the best not just for, but from ourselves. Do you want a helping hand and open heart to help you reconnect with the center of who you are?

Therapy should provide a safe, nonjudgmental relationship through which to explore those parts of you that may make you feel ashamed or afraid, to develop meaningful insights, and to discover your strengths. I have extensive experience working with people seeking to overcome traumatic life events - sexual violations, abuse, neglect, extreme acts of violence - but have found that, in the end, it can sometimes be the seemingly small, overlooked wounds that take longest to heal. No matter how stuck and hopeless you may feel, you have the power to take control and embrace the person you'd like to be.

How does trauma impact systems? This is the question that guides my practice as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Trauma is like an invasive plant, weaving its way throughout multiple parts of our lives. Untreated trauma can feel like it’s blocking all light. I’ve been working in the field of trauma since 2012. My work has taken me to Haiti, where I volunteered with an orphanage, helping staff become more trauma-informed. I’ve worked with clients of all ages and backgrounds, including children and adults who are survivors of sexual abuse.

There are few things in life that are certain. Of those few things, change is among the most difficult to cope with. As we encounter change our natural reaction can be to push back and become shut off to our environment. I would love to walk with you through the hardships of life and empower you to make the best choice.

Not accepting new clients
I am not currently accepting new clients. Seeking a new therapist can be overwhelming and even intimidating but I believe everyone is the expert on their own life. I enjoy working with individuals who are totally new to counseling and with people who have had bad experiences with therapy in the past. If you're not sure where to start or what modalities will most help you, that's ok. Counseling is a process, one that requires trust and connection, and as long as my clients are invested in themselves I am willing to put the time and effort into their success.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
