Every person’s journey is unique. The unknowns and the ups and downs can add adventure. At times, life can be frightening, overwhelming or disheartening. During these times, we might turn inward or outward. Those inward turns can become loneliness, anxiety, or depression. The outward turns can manifest as uncontrolled behavior or lashing out. Seeking guidance and help in these times can get you back on track. At Hope Haven, we believe there is a path for everyone. We will join the journey with you on a path that moves in a present and future-oriented direction. A path that accepts current circumstances but moves forward in hope.

In my training as a therapist, I've studied various perspectives that have helped me understand men's inner thoughts and motivations, which has furthered my ability to assist men in their personal development through working with clients over the years. I use an eclectic approach with different modalities that it's committed to emphasize interactional patterns with people and the environment that have caused the problems. With this understanding, I help my clients overcome worries, anxieties, fears, and difficult emotions or situations.

I have an extensive history of working with high-risk infants and young children and detained adolescents and young adults who present with trauma in addition to co-occurring disorders and a significant number of economic barriers. I believe parenting and family healing are vital to successful outcomes when working with young children and adolescents. I have always worked in child welfare, so becoming a licensed mental health counselor was an easy transition.

Do you typically find yourself making statements such as: I can’t shake this feeling. My children never follow my directions. I’m unsatisfied with my life! Why can’t I stop thinking about this, it happened 10 years ago? I’m worried about my daughter? If so, I am here to help. We often become content with life circumstances, when we have the power to regain control. It’s time to live a life we love! Allow me to walk alongside you, as we navigate through life’s challenges.

After over thirty years in practice, my most studied specialty is in relationship counseling. Loving feelings can grow when couples make a commitment of just 4 to 6 sessions. I teach enhanced communication skills and a conflict resolution model to help you talk out an issue all the way to a solution. I can help you move past the anger and towards a deeper connection. Some couples disagree over personality traits or gender differences? I increase your understanding of these differences so you can let go of those negative feelings. And I will help you change patterns of behavior that disrupt your present relationship.

Therapy provides you with the unique opportunity to come out of your comfort zone and experience life in a more fulfilling way. Coming out of one's comfort zone can be challenging and anxiety provoking, but it is well worth the struggle when you see how much more fulfillment and freedom you have in your life at the end of therapy. My role is to help you interpret and help you make sense of the stressors that brought you to therapy. I will also work with you as you create new adaptive ways of coping that will lead to greater life fulfillment.

Life in the 21st century can be overwhelming. Stress affects relationships, work, social groups, home, health...and the list goes on. I've been working with individuals, families and organizations for 20+ years. I've had the best clinical training available in a broad range of techniques (below). I am board certified in clinical social work and hypnosis. I have a PhD in natural health. Prior to that, I worked for 25 years as a policy manager for corporate, government and non profit organizations, and understand work/home stress. We'll talk about what's going on in your life, and what approach will help you move forward.

Motherhood—in all its forms—can be both deeply beautiful and deeply challenging. For some, it begins with joy; for others, it begins with longing, uncertainty, or loss. Many of my clients come to me carrying emotions that feel heavier than expected. They are seeking a safe space to process the complexities of pregnancy, postpartum changes, infertility, loss, or difficult decisions along the way.

Art therapy can access our emotions and experiences in ways that may be deeper or more meaningful than words alone. I understand that sitting in front of a new person and talking about feelings or past traumas can feel inaccessible or intimidating. In my work as a board certified art therapist and licensed mental health counselor, I have found that art therapy can help to ease some of that discomfort by providing an alternate form of self expression, no art experience required! My therapeutic style includes aspects of process-focused artmaking, mindfulness, somatic therapy, as well as social justice and intersectional feminism.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
