Sometimes, life can be extremely difficult and feel out of control. Many of us have been taught that asking for help is a sign of weakness, but I believe that we need to challenge that thought. The ability to be vulnerable, to say we are not okay and to reach out for support, is the bravest step we can take. I have personally witnessed individuals who had experienced years of trauma, addiction and mental health challenges create meaningful lives that brought them a sense of joy and peace. They found a new sense of purpose and created the healthy loving relationships. They realized the laughter they heard was once again their own.

Founded on a person-centered approach, I believe that the professional relationship is a large part of the therapeutic work. Although I integrate several evidence-based modalities including cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, somatic, psycho-dynamic, & motivational interviewing interventions, I welcome any presentation for both adults as well as youth.

New parenthood can leave you feeling stuck in survival mode. You may find yourself struggling with birth trauma, postpartum anxiety, postpartum depression, or just struggling with adjusting to the ways your life has changed. Maybe you can't get off the hamster wheel of no sleep, poor self-care, frustration, irritability, flashbacks, exhaustion and raw emotions. This can put strain on your relationships with others, your baby and yourself. Or perhaps you do not even recognize the person you are becoming. And it can be hard to ask for help while also learning how to care for a new life.

I know there isn't always the time, money, energy or desire to deal with our emotions or past trauma. Inevitably, we become exhausted by trying to push down our feelings, or at times our emotions overwhelm us and come out in ways that are harmful to ourselves or others. Facing your emotions can be scary, but you don't have to do it alone. This quote by an unknown author resonates with me as I think about my work as a therapist, "I understand if you have not felt safe enough or energetic enough or ready enough to feel what is in your heart. Sweet one remember, you cannot delay it indefinitely."

People often tell you that you are so strong and brave and appear to “have it all together” but inside that feels so far from reality. Do you have feelings of overwhelm or shame around if you are doing “it” right?- whatever “it” may be. Perhaps you feel guilty for spending too much time with the baby, or not enough time with the baby, or wanting time away from the baby. All of these are valid and deserve space to be said aloud. Maybe you feel worried all the time that something might go wrong. You have an inner voice that knows you want something to be different. You have the strength to create a life that is authentically yours.

I work with people pleasers, perfectionists, and over achievers who have gotten some terrible messages throughout life from family, relationships, school, and society as a whole about who you "should" be. You have heard that your feelings are unimportant or perhaps "wrong." As a result, you have set out to make others happy instead of yourself in the form of caregiving, parenting, high intensity jobs, or compensating with lots of education. In the process, you have buried your own feelings, thoughts and beliefs, and are constantly on the the lookout that someone will discover that you are a "fake" or an "imposter."

We live in a world quickly changing with many demands and stressors. Therapy is like working out at a gym. Instead, it is building inner strength and emotional fitness. Traumas or events can happen in life leading to a dysregulated nervous system. We can experience the loss of a job, partner, or identity; the loss of a loved one or pet; disease, illness, financial instability; relationship or family issues, or housing crisis that spin our worlds upside down. Maybe it is low self-worth, stress, or feeling stuck in life. With over 10 years of experience in the mental health field, I am here to be a supportive ally for your growth.

I specialize in Christian counseling and strive to help everyone find purpose in their experiences, create a vision for healing and truly embrace their full potential. My approach for clinical work has always been to be present with each person and encourage them to use whatever trials they have experienced to become stronger and enhance their overall story. I genuinely believe none of us have to be defined by what has happened to us in life, but rather can use those experiences, good and bad alike, to become better versions of ourselves.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
